I always loved how people said Sam made the band "terrible." The music was good, and the shift started happening during Diver Down. Hell, Van Halen was always making pop songs with Dave.

5150 was a dramatic departure from the previous 6 albums. They sounded like an entirely different band. That's what the Sam haters blame him for.

There was no "shift" in the first 6 albums that comes close to the change from 1984 to 5150. It may be easy to sit here now and say there was a "shift" with Diver Down but I don't know anyone who felt that while it was happening.

This is not directed at you but your post prompted this thought. If some people see a similarity to Journey that's fine but instrumentally, Van Hagar destroys Journey. I also don't think bad lyrics are anywhere to be found on 5150.

Sam's best lyrics are on 5150. Lot of great stuff on there.

I obviously prefer VH to Journey.....not even close of course. But instrumentally I'll give Journey it's due. Their overall sound may be cheesy but they have some great shit musically.

How about this - I blame Ed, Al, Mike and Dave for the Sam era, which I only like about 1/3 of.

I blame Dave for being a obnoxious asshole who was nearly impossible to work with.

I blame Ed and Al for bringing in Sammy to replace him. Wish they had gotten a better singer. Just my opinion!

Mike? Well, I blame him just because he was there...

Can't blame Sam. He knew what an opportunity it was for him and he ran with it. Always had the look of "look what I caught!" on his face, like the cat with a mouse in his mouth.

But - they invited him in and wrote all of the Van Hagar classics many people love.

Now I just don't give a shit at all!
