VH Song Tournament 2K1: Round 1

It's time to begin round one of the 2001 Van Halen Song Tournament. Sixteen songs go in, and only one will come out alive [img]smilies/cool.gif[/img]

The songs represented here were selected on the weighted nomination point scale with four being chosen on a most votes basis in a tie breaking round. They were divided into two NCAA tournament style brackets. Songs were positioned in the bracket randomly (I drew song names out of a hat [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]).

We've got some interesting matchups. Vote for one song from each match, and the song with the most votes in each match at the end of the week advances to round 2.

I'll say, Goo. I can remember sitting there "drawing" (literally) up the matches thinking, "Whoever gets Unchained is so screwed." Then I pull Mean Street.

I'd say the fact that every pair (save Hear About it Later and WCTBL) are are somewhere between one to two votes apart (or tied up) testifies to how a lot of these could go either way.

Anyway, keep it up. 4 more days to vote for those who are interested.

You know in a tournement, ususally you line up the best against the weak in the first rounds. You have made soem tough pairings.

some of those were not fair, and i had vote for a couple because of which CD it came from.

As Glenn pointed out, the songs were chosen last week (with an extra couple days added in to break a 5 way tie for the last 4 spots).

I thought the only way to be fair and non-biased (and to keep things interesting) would be to totally randomize the matches. The only method I could think of to do this was to write each song down on a piece of paper, fold it in half, mix them up, and draw them out of a hat. And based on the fact that only three or four matches have large differences, I'd say I succeeded.

Don't want anyone accusing me of stacking the competition to artificially advance a Sammy-era song. Though I am interested in the outcome of Bracket 2, since it seemed to fall that most of them went there...
