I heard Summer Nights, but I don't know much more. Good question!
I'd like to know what hand Dave did have in 5150.

My opinion has always been that Dave wrote the lyrics and the melodies. Nothing more, nothing less. Just can't see Dave saying to Ed, "Check out this mean guitar riff I just wrote."

I always assumed Dave wrote the lyrics and melodies in addition to having a sufficient amount of input on arrangements. Eddie created a lot of "riffs", not complete songs all the time. Hagar has also corroborated that this was the case when he was in the band; that he took most of Eddie's "riffs" and arranged them into songs while writing lyrics. Perhaps we'd get a different story from Ed than we do from Sam and Dave. Actually, I'm almost sure we'd get a different story from Ed because we've always gotten a different story than Ed. And lately, we haven't gotten any of his perspective on anything!
I think it's painfully obvious when you look at III that Hagar and Roth had a lot more to do with the songwriting than simply writing lyrics and melodies.

I bet the music for some of the songs were written when Dave was still in the band but all the lyrics were probably Sammy's.

If indeed Dave did write some lyrics for songs on 5150, wouldn't those lyrics be a great segue into a duet on the Sam & Dave tour or what?

I would tend to agree mostly with Dan. I can go so far as to imagine Sammy using some of Dave's lyrical ideas - say maybe Dave was the reason the song was called "Summer Nights", but I would imagine Sammy rewrote the words, or at least the majority of them. Otherwise I would think Dave would've pushed real hard for a songwriting credit.

I don't know...
Really, I don't!
If I had to guess, however, based on Sammy's interviews for the Balance album, the singers are given mostly completed songs to write lyrics for. Balucitherium (or whatever) was waiting for Sammy lyrics, and somebody said let's just leave it alone as an instrumental, so they did. I would imagine there are some changes made when lyrics are done to account for chorus and melodies, but other than that interview, I never recall hearing anything specific. It was always Ed writes the music, the singer does the lyrics.
I also recall that after 3 they said that, for the first time, the music was written around the lyrics, not the lyrics written to the music. Also leads me to believe that traditional VH song writing was music just about done, then lyrics.

According to several reports, Dave had input on "Good Enough" and "Get Up". I do not know how much Dave helped on those songs. Dave's input may have been the same as Sammy's on CGTSNM - there may have been an original song that the band took apart and made it into something else. I'm pretty sure that Sammy wrote the lyrics. It would be interesting to hear if there was a demo of those two songs with Dave singing and Dave's lyrics.

"Summer Nights" was definitely a Van HALEN song. Van Hagar never did another song like it. They probably used Sammy's lyrics, but I'll bet the song was otherwise complete.
I'm still thinking there will be some sort of box set or "Anthology" released by the end of the year. (Eddie has to pay his lawyers somehow) Hopefully the original 5150 demos will be part of it. (And if not, Scotty Ross or someone better come up with a bootleg.....)Eat Us And Smile
Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!
...It's the BAND and Dave is really the cat that can front VH. He sang his ASS off and was really cool. No cheese here guys, this is filet Mignon! - Steve Lukather's comment after witnessing a Van HALEN 2007 rehearsal

Why do you think that there will be a "box set" release this year? With all that is happening, or not happening, depending on your perspective, in the Van Halen/DLR/Sammy Hagar Camp, it would seem to me that there is absolutely no current plans to do anything at all, or release anything at all in the near or very distant future. To me, it is obvious that Ed and Al do not want to have anything to do with their musical past and most likely have no desire to give their fans anything at all that would allow royalties to be paid to Dave or Sammy. Their continued silence, especially during this time when Dave and Sam are promoting their summer tour, to me is quite deafening.
Although they released their rights to the "masters" with the WB split, "Van Halen", as it exists now, would still have to give the OK to release anything. I don't see it happening.

a box set somewhere at the end of this tour would be a good marketing strategy--for all 6 of those guys.
-club years
-VH/Roth studio leftovers
-live roth era disc
-Hagar leftovers
-rare live disc(Cabo Wabo Opening gig, etc)
-interview disc--various interviews over the years
that's 6 discs right there!
and if this box came out right at the end of the summer? that would be a good move for the brothers. I'm sure DLR wouldn't mind the money.
so releasing a box set like that would be a good idea.
but, I think I have an even BETTER idea than that

I seem to remember that Dave came by a heard some of the "rough" versions of "Summer Nights" and "Good Enough" and was not real impressed.
I'd have to do some "homework" to find that interview, but I have it here somewhere.

"Summer Nights" was the only song on 5150 that Dave had worked on. They rough cut it with Dave singing a completely different melody and lyric. It wasn't even titled "Summer Nights". Ed had peices of "5150", "Top of the World", "Get up", "Right Now", and some other riffs yet to be worked into complete songs, musically.
