I haven't bought them...are they far superior to the original cd's?

Opinions on this vary alot. For me, when I first got them and played them, I couldn't tell much of a difference at all. The way I was able to tell the difference was to listen to a snippet of a song from the old version first, and then to immediately listen to the same section on the remastered version. That's when I noticed the difference, and even then it seems more of a volume difference than anything else.
Having said that, VanEdge ran them through SoundForge and got a scan of the sounds, and the remasters showed to be much fuller.
I don't have musicians ears by any stretch of the imagination, but I had to have the remasters. But I'd bet that if you put a Van Halen CD on the stereo, I'd be hard pressed to tell whether it was the original or the remaster.

I would have to agree with Glenn on this one. There isn't a huge difference between the remasters and the original cd's and the difference that you do notice is primarily in volume. Personally, if you wanted to avoid buying all of the remasters, I noticed the biggest difference on the VH2 and Fair Warning remasters. These definately sounded crisper and much louder at a given volume to me.

Awards:
I'd buy one - either DD or vh2 probably, and have a listen, before shelling out for the set
I personally think theres more 'bottom end', and some of Als drums sound cleaner.

The remasters kick ass totally!!! You can actually hear Mikey on bass and it even highlights some of his backups especially on "where have all the good times gone". The 3 ablums I bought were VH2, Fair Warning, and 84'. They sound 110% better IMO!

I need to grab remastered 1984 & Van Halen I. I can't even listen to 1984 because it's too damn quiet, and 5150 could use some work too.

There's more of a clarity of sound to some of them (DD especially), insomuchas you can define subtle things better.
Like (as I've been educated) the volume swells in Cathedral, or the harmonies by the backing vocals in Pretty Woman.

I"m getting FW and VHII since everyone thinks they've gotten the most improvements made. Maybe 1984 later on.
I'll get VH1 last since I've got the gold disc and it's a little better I think than the original.

I ended up getting VHI. I found it at Borders Books and Music in the cutout sales bin. They made a mistake and priced the one I got for $7.99. They had the first 3 VH albums in the cutout bin for $7.99 and the remasters were normal price of $13.99 except for the copy that I found.
Needless to say, I have been checking back often to see if they make more mistakes like that!!!
Anyway, not a whole lot of difference to my ears except for the volume and clarity part which is cool.

The remasters are not just louder in volume, they are "Thicker" in sound as well. They are much richer sounding and are (IMO) well worth having!
