That is a most excellent and worthy idea, dirty movies. The fans would totally eat up new versions of those unused tunes from the early days...songs like Voodoo Queen (?) and Babe, Don't Leave Me Alone...

I know the Atomic Punks were considering doing that at one point. Does anyone know what happened to the project?

Van Halen, or their organization said NO WAY. They said that EVH might still want to use some those ideas/songs from the demo days later on.

As far as DLR using them, it's possible but not very likely. The only way I could see it happening is if VH gives Dave a solid "no" about returning as their singer, and/or VH calls it quits and DLR decides to buy the rights to the material.

Dave and Kid Rock should record an album together. It could be like Sammy Davis Junior and Dean Martin were..they could really make a lot of money with that. Oh yeah.

Actually, a lot of 'Voodoo Queen' became what is now 'Mean Street' and 'Babe, Don't Leave Me Alone' has elements of something else that they recorded (I'm The One or something).

One song that screams to have the modern recording treatment is 'Big Trouble'. Great song.

Now, because DLR is a co-writer on the all the tunes, wouldn't he have title rights to them as well as Edward. I wonder who owns the publishing on them.

Another great tune is 'Last Night'. Man, these guys were so talented that their throwaways were total fucking golden gems.

One thing that must be noted though is that an element of those tunes that sounds so great are Michael Anthony's unique and melodic yet powerful back up vocals (not to mention Alex on the skins).

Here's the dream scenario: David Lee Roth gets his new band to record the old discarded Van Halen songs but it is MANDATORY that he (or the record company) shell out the cash to get Michael Anthony into the studio for a midnight recording session to do ALL OF THE BACKUP VOCALS. This guy is a bloody unrecognized treasure who makes the chorus so magical. Just think of 'Me Wise Magic' without Michael Anthony's wonderful backups in the chorus - it wouldn't have worked; his voice help to make that song what it is. Or think of Jamie's Cryin' without Anthony. Or 'Panama'.

I think the one thing being overlooked here is that Dave was 1/4 of the band. I can completely see why Ed would not give up the rights to the music that he wrote. It pisses me off just as much to see that VH is doint anything with them at the moment too although maybe we will be fortunate enough to get some of it down the road.

Another sad fact is that it doesn't seem very likely that VH will every reunite with Dave so Dave will have to come up with his own material.

The problem with either one of them releasing anything they did prior to 1984 is this: It wouldn't be VH. The vibe is gone and they cannot get it back. The best we could hope for is that VH opens up some of their vaults of tape and release some old shows on video or CD/Cassette. Other than that, they seem not to have any kind of a future together. Twice Roth has tried to get back with them...if not more and each time it ends up in a shouting match in the media. It is so undeniably stupid what egos and money have done to what was once an awesome band.
Van Halen without the original 4 is just not Van Halen.

Granted it wouldn't be VH but it would be be a song written by VH performed by the original frontman. That in itself is an exciting prospect.

I want those three songs Roth did with them a couple of years ago even. My question is this: Even if Roth came back and did some old tunes with them just for old times sake...Would the energy and soul be there? What we have now is a twice scorned frontman and then we have an axeman who is more concerned with being the boss than making the music. I doubt if Roth would even contact them again...even if they came calling. Look at him, he's out with Sammy, another ex VH victim, er, I mean singer and he his having a blast. Why would he want to go back to, "Dave, you can't sing it that way." or, "Dave, it is just a side project. Don't get your hopes up....by the way, can you appear on MTV with us in front of millions of people?" ??????
Though I would be so thrilled to have them both back together, I am not willing to get my hopes up for another failed reunion attempt...not even to do a fricking song. I don't care. If they want to be professional buttholes instead of making music that makes people happy, then so be it. I am not getting emotionally wired on any more reunion news or whatever any longer. If the VH bros. put out a decent next record with whoever, I might listen to it at a friend's house...if they even remember who VH is. If I liked it, I might spend some hard earned cash on it. Long gone are the days where I blindly support the VH bros. just because of past musical achievements. Sorry, III just was that bad.

That being said, they could, for all I care, just to projects with Roth and not go on tour, since they can't get along. That would be fine. BUT, I would be also be listening for quality music then as well. I have a hard time not kicking myself for buying shitty music. I am a musician and know what good music sounds like. I would like to think that my ear is getting more and more refined as the years go on.

Does Van Halen even own the rights to those tunes, or does WB own them?
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -
