The House of the Devil (2009)
*sigh* I have to be careful with this one.
I'll say that this is one of those horror films that goes to great lengths to build up dread. It does do that effectly, but it's the kind of film where the resolution will divide people. Does it live up to the build up? I didn't quite think so.
The movie was written, directed and filmed to look like a movie that was made in the 1980's, while taking inspiration from the 1970's and late 60's. The soundtrack is totally 80's sounding. I appreciate the l9ok, score and the characters. There are many positive elements, but I didn't really feel satisfied with where it went. It's worth watching for sure, but understand that it is a slow build that suddenly kind of rushes to get where it wants to go.
I'd give it a 6/10. Maybe a 6.5/10 a good day.
Michael Caine on Jaws: The Revenge:
"I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built and it is terrific."

I had read how bad Costner's 'Horizon' was but we watched it this weekend and it was a very good movie. Thrilling throughout. Looking forward to Chapter 2.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

It was ok. He's made better westerns. I'll still give Chapter 2 a viewing. He said he had more chapters to tell, but I doubt he'll ever realize the full vision since it was a flop.
One thing I'll say about movies these days, I think HD or digital kind of ruins some movies. I think if Costner had shot this movie on film, it would at least look more genuine. I supposed it's because I was raised on movies shot on film and they looked how I thought movies were supposed to look, at least to my young self.

In The Heat Of The Night (1967) right now on TCM
Starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. Life in the South until a murder gets a black cop involved. Won the Oscar for Best Picture and Steiger for Best Actor. Still gripping and uncomfortable to watch at times.

Has veteran character actor Anthony James ever played a good guy? His famous pock-marked face insured his career as one bad looking dude. He even came out on Married with Children, and you guessed it... was a bad guy! Look for him on "Al Bundy: Shoe Dick" with the juicy but infamous Traci Lords. Hilarious stuff!
