In which order?

Does Eddie write the music and then Dave/Sammy/Gary write the lyrics?

Or is it the other way around?

Or is it just preference and alot depends on a particular song or their particular moods?

With DLR and Sammy......the music came most of the time....then came lyrics....

With Gary.....lyrics came first......then the music........which I think this is one of the reasons why "3" just doesn't have that "Van Halen" sound......

On a few occasions......Sammy heard the music......and said, "Hey I got some cool lyrics already that would work for that riff......Cabo Wabo I beleive worked out that way.

I do remember Ed saying that he was always impressed with how DLR could come up with vocals for some of his music.

A good example of a tune that just doesn't work as far the music and lyrics.......Ballot or the Bullet.....killer song.....but that chourus...or lack of chourus sounds like a forced attempt...

I am gonna move this over to the Song Forum and see if anyone knows any other stories on what came first........
