Which songs do you think have Dave's best lyrics. In A Simple Rhyme has got to be one of the best:

Well, back in the past when I was, treated so coldly
My love life was a darn disgrace
Needed someone to love n' hold me
That's one of the reasons that I was outta place
So, this is love? Well she finally kissed me
Had me all worked up inside
I wanted love but cupid missed me
She up and left and I almost died

But I was young and I was far from lonely
I been that way for a long, long year
Needed a girl to call my one and only
    Is that you?

Ya think ya got the interest?
Come on an' take the time
'Cause you know, I wanna be
    Yours in a simple rhyme

    Wow!
    Hey! Hey! Hey!

Well, ain't life grand when ya finally hit it?
I'm always a sucker for a real good time
Woke up in life, found I almost missed it
Ain't I glad that love is blind?

But I was young an' I was, far too crazy
Been that way for a long, long time
Needed a girl but I was just too lazy
    Now that I've found you

Ya think ya got the interest?
Come on an' take the time
I'm gonna be, yours in a simple...

    Rhyme. Rhyme
N' she made the mountains sing
    Birds against an icy sky
    And I heard bells ringin'
I think I heard an angel sigh

And she said, "There'll be times. There will be times."

(Ah ah) You're gonna hear the angels singin'
(Ah ah) You're gonna hear the angels sing, they'll say
(Ah ah. Ah ah. Ah ah ah)
    Ow!

    (Guitar Solo)

    Oh!
    Oh, yeah!
    Ha! Ah! Yeah

Ya think ya got the interest
Come on an' take the time
I'm gonna be yours in a simple...

    Rhyme. Rhyme. Rhyme

I've always thought the line was "you think you got the address" too. Hard to be definitive about Daves lyrics when even he admits that he doesn't remember what the exact lyrics were to many classic VH songs. That brings up a good point. Is there some lyrical bible out there somewhere that has Daves blessing? I mean, how do we really know for sure about some of these lyrics???

I figured since those lyrics were on van-halen.com that they were the official lyrics, I don't know, let's ask Dave

I wonder about the DLR era lyrics at Brad's site. I was looking at "Could This Be Magic?" and I always thought the line was "Could this turn tragic? You know that magic all pent up", but now I'll have to relisten. And "In A Simple Rhyme", I always thought it was "interest", but I thought the second line was "My love life was a cryin' disgrace". Didn't anybody write things down back then?

Last night I listened to an old studio bootleg of Simple Rhyme and the first two times it sounded like "you got the address" but the third time it did sound like "you got the interest".

Dave's was always an old bluesman, so who knows what he was singing. He probably doesn't know either, or care.

Hard to narrow down a favorite Dave lyric, but here are a few of mine:

"Well, my baby's on the corner and she's lookin' so fine
Put one and one together and it blowed my mind
A man needs love to live, I'm the living proof
Catch that smile and I hit the roof!"

    CLASSIC!

"Got one foot out the door
    Tryin' to hit the road
Ain't no match for your mean old man
I think it's time to roll..."

LOVE the part about her Mean Old Man!

"Look at all these little kids
Takin' care of the music biz
Don't their bus'ness take good care of me, honey"

"Looks just like an angel, but he's just talking trash
( Ah ) You make conversation, but she's listening to your cash!"

AND FINALLY (although I could keep going)

"Some goes to women, some goes to Jesus,
though I'm absolutely certain both's all right.
But it takes me at least halfway to the label
'fore I can even make it through the night!"

    Dave rules...

    My favorite:

She wore a whole lot of not enough
And served it up with class
    Had a sunny disposition
    And a somewhat shady past
    Her t-shirt ended early
And her hot pants started late
When it came to vice and versa
    No I did not hesitate

    others:

    Danger in the rearview mirror
    There's trouble in the wind
    Badness bringing up the rear
    The menace's loose again
    She looks so fuckin' good
    So sexy and so frail
Something got the bite on me
    I'm goin' straight to hell

    favorite description:

Blue eyed murder in a size 5 dress

    others:

All i wanna give you woman Is the best part of a man

How many times Have you said to yourself
    Hey, I feel like a yo-yo
    I've been here too long
I bet if you asked them
    Our heroes would say,
    Hey, we're already gone
    I know, somehow I know

    Till I finally made it
Life was kinda hit or miss
    But after I made it
Life was "Take a hit of this"
And I'd love to talk philosophy
But I've gotta take a piss
Man, that philosophy runs right through ya

    I RESPECT YOUR INTELLECT
    MORE IMPRESSIVE STILL
    ARE YOU SPORTING SKILLS
    DO I DETECT
    INTEGRITY AND SELF-RESPECT?
    COOL
NOW LOSE THE DRESS, KEEP THE SHOES

    ONLY ADVENTURES THAT I REGRET
    ARE THE ONES I MISSED
AND THE THOUGHT OF THE PRETTY GIRLS
    I NEVER TRIED TO KISS

I like almost all of Dave's lyrics, but my favorite two are Secrets and Little Guitars.
