The Talk About Anything (music related) Thread
So you ever have a thought about a few bands or a song or a genre or something having to do with music but it doesn't really fit in a specifc band's thread?
We worry no more. Here we can toss out random musical observations and reflections, ask general questions etc.
I'll go first.
I was talk to RRMB and VHR a bit ago about blue collar rockers. Who is your favourite: Seger, Springsteen or Mellencamp?
I suppose we could expand the list to include Jon Bon and Billy Joel as well though I don't think those last two are quite the same as the first three.Stay out of it, dude.
I am Van Halen.

"Blue Collar Rock"......Roots Rock"......"Heartland Rock"......whatever you want to call it.....Nobody did it better than the guys who arguably invented it......

I do love the CCR, and I feel that their material (his material?) is way more musically influential than the other three. Mellencamp would probably be last in musical influence. The Boss would be first in terms of making people happy to be at a concert. So I'd say CCR is the stand-alone winner here, but beyond that, I would hate to have to choose between Segar and Mellencamp. I'd put Mellencamp ahead of everyone in sheer middle-finger attitude.
Hell, I guess my point here is that Bruce would be last place in my personal tastes.
And Billy Joel, jeez, that guy is a national musical iconic treasure, with definite blue-collar and regional metropolitan tones. A versatile wine for any meal.

Awards:
Personal preference: Mellencamp
Best band: CCR
I know some people hate them, but do you almost lump Bon Jovi in the "blue collar rock" canon? They are about as hard rock/metal as Kelly Clarkson since New Jersey was released. If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.
Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"
David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

As far as the three mentioned by Broken, I'm as outspoken as anyone about Seger being the "Every Man" in his catalog as far as songs that seem to connect with moments in my own personal life.
Blue collar, CCR is up there, but would have to give a hard look to Skynyrd as well for the stuff they released back when was still actually Skynyrd.11/05/78 Hollywood Sportatorium

I gotta agree with ya here. Of the 3 I'd take Mellencamp.
But Bon Jovi is basically a hair band that cut their hair, changed their image and toned it down just enough and just in time to break free of the hair band label when grunge hit. I guess they have some songs that could fit the "blue collar" category, but as a whole I wouldn't put them in that genre at all.
If we're lookin at 80's hard rock bands that my be "blue collar" my vote is TESLA

Probably can say the same thing about Van Halen's 3 album - you think you're going to hear Van Halen, then at some point "How Many Say I" comes on!
