I have a question for all of you out there who has been lucky enough to meet Eddie. I've read somewhere once that he and Robert Plant were considered two of the snobbiest guys in rock.

I also read during the LA police golf fund raiser last year, that Eddie refused to let a fan take a picture of him when he asked for permission, then turned around and while he was posing with someone for a picture that same guy took his picture and Ed bitched at him for it.

I was just curious if anyone could tell me what they thought of him when they met him (considering it doesn't look like i'll ever get to )

Did a Meet and Greet with him during the Balance Tour.

He was in high spirits for the 15 minutes I was in the room with him and the 30 seconds my group was chatting and having our picture taken with him.
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

The guy at the golf tournement was probably FORD.

But I have met Eddie twice and he was great both times. They are a band that was allways good to their fans. But over the last few years they seem to have gotten lost and are in need of some serious soul searching. They have all been taking us for granted since 1996.

Sammy still appreciates his fans very much. I can't say anything about Dave because his true feelings are masked by his "on-stage persona". On the surface he seems like "its all about me" and "ain't I great". But I don't know if Dave has let anyone get close enough to him to see the real Dave. So thats the reputation he has, as an arrogant egomaniac that only cares about himself.

Thats very true what muffdvr said about bad days. We're all human and it must be tough some days to be the nice guy to everyone you encounter. An old drummer of mine met Robert Plant and had nothing but great things to say, so there you go. I've heard of some really nice encounters w/Roth as well. Most of the time he is more than happy to sign an autograph and chat if he has the time. Your best bet to find him is to go to Cheetah's in Hollywood, seriously. Sam of course we all know as friendly so no problems there. Eddie's more of a private guy, but nice as well if you approach him nicely. I know everyone feels as a fan that they have the right to approach their favorite celebrity, the trick is to pick the right time. Sometimes it's better to leave someone alone as well. This isn't music related but one time I was at Fashion Island which is an upscale mall by Newport Beach CA in the late 80's. I had to pick up a tux and was waiting cutting a smoke outside. I see this couple window shopping at a jewelry store display window. I about shit myself when I saw it was Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Paul Newman is one of my favorite actors, but upon looking at the two of them I realized I was better off leaving them alone. They were probably happy to have a little peace and quiet and seemed pretty romantic together. Why spoil it w/"can I get a picture or an autograph", you know? Hey, I got a priceless memory and they got their anonymity, cool...

What a great post!

Just a quick thought... what do you do with an autograph anyway? Really the only thing it's good for is to prove you met the person. Maybe. Autographs are easy to forge. Photo's are better.

Seriously, isn't it enough to just meet someone? I would rather shake Eddie's hand and maybe ask a question than hand him a peice of paper to sign. Now a autographed guitar is another story...

And I totally agree with giving celebrities some space. Your Paul Newman story is so much better than the story of someone ran up and got an autograph. Hell, you got to see the guy acting like himself and not having to "be" a star. Good on you, Big D!

Ed is a bit of a snob, yeah.

And Van Halen as whole was never particularly fan-friendly.

I know a person who met Eddie at one point 5-6 years ago. She said he was very friendly and a genuinely nice person.

I've heard that Al is a bit of a dick and that Roth is a total asshole.

I heard about the golf thing; but I think that was taken out of context. Something about the person asked if he could take Ed's picture & he asked if it could wait until after the tournanent and the guy did anyway; eddie basically said why did you ask.
Winners come and go; legends are forever.

Please use the private message feature JMJ. We like to keep this area clear.

Well I was in Eddie's gallery during that LAPD golf tourney and yes, Eddie turned down autographs and photos but for very good reasons. If you've ever played golf you know it ain't cool to hold everyone up that is playing behind you. If Ed gives 1 person an autograph, then he's gotta give the next guy a pic, and an autograph, thus holding up the people behind him. Eddie explained that to all the fans that asked him for autographs and pics. He also told them that there would be plenty of time after he played his 18 holes for all the pics and autographs that the fans wanted. There were a few that refused to listen and basically ignored what Eddie had told them. Eddie begrudgingly let them take their precious pics. If you've seen any of these pics on the net you can tell Eddie ain't smiling and he didn't put his arm around anybody. So yeah, he was a little ticked because he had said almost every hole that they would have to wait until the end but as I said, people ignored his request. I even found myself getting pissed at people at the golf tourney becasue it just seemed like Eddie was getting hounded over and over. I went with VHFourms member Whiteboy that day and we NEVER once asked for an autograph, photograph, never asked how Wolfie was, we didn't bug him one bit. Eddie did ask if anyone wanted his golf ball. Nobody spoke up said I say "I'll take it Eddie!" to which he replied "No you won't"...with that typical EVH grin that we all know and love and them tossed me his ball.

So I guess what it gets down to is that if you are not going to show respect and ignore a Eddie's request, he might just come off a little snobby to you. To me he was nicer than he needed to be.

No he's not. Maybe people should stop believing they have a right to harrass celebrities as if they aren't people too. Fans can be major assholes too. I'd tell you, with some of the attitude and disrespect I see on this board with regards to Ed, I wouldn't want to talk to some of you either if I was him.
