...classic van halen holds a vivid and intextricable link to the youth of a generation that now runs the banks, the tv stations and the post offices of america; in a just world the greatness of eddie, dave, alex and michael would be recognized and celebrated, venerated and worshipped; eddie van halen is the charlie parker or the stan getz of the jazz age that was the hard rock golden era of the late seventies to the early eighties - and he's still with us! why isn't this man HOWARD celebrated more? sure sinatra had his rough periods but he never received the critical beating like the one eddie got for 3, or the one that dave gets from his detractors; although some guitar purists lamented the direction eddie went post-dave - more song oriented than virtuoso - he was smart to do this as it appealed to a STERN greater public not interested in the science of dive bombs and tapping...

Van Halen is like the Led Zeppelin of the early 80's. No other band was as good, or talented. Classic Van Halen defined what it was to be a rock band in the 80's, and even beyond. In 1978 when every band was doing some type of disco, Van Halen came in with this hard edge kick ass rock album that blew everyone away. They continued to kick ass even after Dave was gone, but the magic they had was gone. Classic Van Halen is the best of it's era period.

    Default Same team

All Van Halen is classic Van Halen. I love David because he was the one who sang Jump on 1984. But Van Halen with Sammy made some great, great songs. Four guys of incredible talent no matter if its Sammy or Dave. No team ever keeps the players together. Look, the Lakers lost Shack, but its still Lakers. If you say you only like Dave and not Sammy, then you are a sheep.

Put on 1984 then 5150 and you hear the genius of them. Sammy got it right from the start, "Hellll-o baaaaybeee!" Classic all way baby! With Van Halen band, you got the Best of Both Worlds. \m/ \m/ (Credit to whoever invented this LWAN hand signal.)

Edward was recently asked by a disc jockey whether he checks out the various Van Halen message boards where hardcore fans have supported Van Halen over the past 5 years of silence. Edward's response? "No, I don't . . . because I have a life."

Not really. I only like Dave era. I dont like Sammy Hagar's voice. I just dont like it. Its annoying to me. There's probably some people who think the same thing of Dave, fine but i wouldnt say they are "sheep" just because their taste buds are different. The music just changed after Dave left, its like they became a more mature adult Van Halen. The real sheep are the ones who say they like everything just because it has the Van Halen name on it and they feel they have to do that in order to prove that they are real fans.

Yes, the Lakers lost Shaq. They aren't even as close to being as good. You do the analogy.

I would say you have it backwards. The classic era songs are way better and more interesting. With Sam, they are just, well, just like everybody else. The verses are kickin but the choruses are schlepp. It's almost like the choruses apologize for the verses kickin your ass.

You mean the Lakers without Shaq went from a championship winning dynasty and the elite team in a league full of pretenders when compared to a Shaq led Lakers to a run-of-mill, middle-of-pack, unspectacular and hanging by thread to make the playoffs team without Shaq. Oops!

100% accurate. The whole band had IT. Whatever IT is. There is an excitement to the classic VH with Dave that I don't think in my lifetime I will ever see in music again. They had it all.
