It really discourages me when I hear about these Britney Spears albums and Nsync albums going diamond in like two years and being absolutely devowered by today's teens. Maybe I was born in the wrong decade, but I bet back in the day, if you let someone listen to Ms. Spears, their ears would start to bleed. They'd go into convulsions saying "What the fuck is this?" and run out of the room screaming, trying to desparately find their Led Zeppelin or Van Halen album to heal their ears. These days, I ask someone if they've heard of Van Halen and they go "oh you mean that hair band?". No one seems to know what good music is these days. Either that or they dont' have anything better, which is also pretty sad. People talking to a beat to synthesizers while using half-naked sluts to make people interested - that's what the world has been reduced to. I realize that as the times change, so does the music, but I would hope that it would get better over time and not sythetic with no lyrical talent. I'm sure some of you might think about this from time to time, but it probably doesn't really bother you. I can listen to these old bands all I want, but eventually I've run out of new songs to listen to. Maybe I love music a bit too much, but I CRAVE something new from someone who has some TALENT. There are some new rock bands out there today, but frankly they all sound alike and don't give me that "feel good" feeling I like to get from music, most are depressing or just pretend to be good but suck. Van Halen had/has everything I loved in a rock band. You played the music and it made you feel good and soothed your soul. Thank God for bands like Linkin Park, 3 Doors Down, and System of a Down, that's all I've got left, unless you count Enya.
How do I know when its love?
I can't tell you but it lasts forever.
How do I know when its love?
Its just somethin you feel together.

I think that the whole music industry is on a "show us the money" kick...has been for quite some time. Artistic creativity, songwriting and showmanship have been replaced with regurgitated corporate money makers!
No one puts out albums like they used to back in the day. When was the last time that you picked up a CD and it completely blew you away? I'll almost bet that it wasn't something you'd hear on mainstream radio. Seems like you've got to go to the underground to find anything like that anymore.
How many boy bands do we really need? How many Korn rip-offs? Get off the bandwagon and do something unique! Oh...that wouldn't sell though would it!? Let's churn out another Britney clone!
I also think a lot of the problem is that so many fans are fly by night, jumping onto what's hot at the moment. That's how Britney and the like sell so many records. Well my friend's got the record, so I've gotta get it too! Next time you're at a concert, take a look around to see who all's there. You'd be suprised at the number of people who are there just to say they've been there. The true fans are outnumbered probably 2 to 1.
Not only that, but a lot of record stores will only sell what's doing well on the charts. I went to my local record store the other day to pick up Napalm Death's new CD; needless to say they didn't have it, and when I asked the clerk about it he looked at me like I was stupid! I was highly ticked off, and told the guy that not everyone listens to Britney and Justin!
I know I'm ranting; sorry, but I agree that the music business has taken a turn for the worse. The great bands and CD's are few and far between anymore.
I even wonder how Van Halen would fare in today's market? Has it gotten so bad that an ass-kicking band such as the mighty VH would be swallowed up by the clone pop that rules the airways, MTV and the charts?
I for one would be there the day it went on sale to get my copy!

Yeah, I was just about to say something about that but I wasn't sure how to say it. Maybe if I let a Britney-fan listen to the next awesome VH cd, would their ears bleed and make them say "What the fuck is this?"? If society has been that dumbed down when it comes to music, then I shudder to this what music will be like in the next 10 to 15 years.
*pauses*
Heh... I just saw Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth on Conan O' Brien being interviewed by that dog puppet thing at the VMAs. They were both pretty wacked out by the dog puppet, but Dave was all in the camera and stuff it was pretty funny. The dog thing talked to a whole bunch other celebrities, or just cussed them out as they walked by. Pretty funny stuff.
Anyway that was interesting. That's actually the first time I've seen either Sam or Dave on television. Go figure. How do I know when its love?
I can't tell you but it lasts forever.
How do I know when its love?
Its just somethin you feel together.

Music is just getting half assed these days, and it really bugs me.

Frankly, I don't find Britny/NSync/et al nearly
as offensive or objectionable as most of
what passes for "rock" music these days.
Bubblegum always has held a formidable market sway, and rock was - in its day - truly an alternative. Nowdays, rock bands are
so concerned with bullshit punk rock ethics
and hip hop credibilty and being clever and
ironic that the idea of craftmanship and pushing the envelope has all but entirely
disappeared. Where have all the good times gone...

I agree..... but I will say when im scanning the channels and pass mtv and catch britney spears video "slave For You" or christina's new video whatever it is dancing in her panties for some reason I just cant shut them off. not cause i like the songs but the videos of them dancing like that makes me watch even more even though my finger wants to press for the next channel, I do then I go back.
but seriously right before nirvana hit everyone was dying for something new and they made it happen, so whats happening now people want something different but def rock n roll. so where is it. I always thought there was a good mix of all kinds of music. now there is but it excludes rock n roll. rap yes, pop yes ...... wheres rock ? system ? pod ? please that stuff is just lame!

Audioslave could possibly be the next big rock band. I've heard a few songs, reminds me of the big gnarly sounds of years gone by! I really like what I've heard so far!

Achievements:
IMHO,
VH would only be a success in todays music world with Sammy. I am a fan of all eras and lean towards DLR a little more, but I am a realist. A DLR VH would be a joke to everyone except all of us at the forums. A Sammy led VH would be a veteran rock band taking on the world. Ed please...don't make me turn to Bon Jovi for that.Rest in Peace Edward Van Halen

Good post. It really ticks me off cuz these monster sales these sucky artists have nowadays, like going DIAMOND in 2 years, almost diminish the sales of great bands like VH. I tell people VH sold 70 Million albums and had 12 straight multi-platinum albums and they usually respons "Well, Britney & Nsync do too!".. RRGHHHHH! lol...
There is such a huge difference between some corporate assembled pop act being played on TRL/ MTV 24/7 selling albums and a hard rock band coming out of LA/Pasadena in 1977!! Hell, MTV didnt exist till almost 1982. You cant even compare the success of the two.
Far as VH being refered to as a hair band, well, most people dont even know what that means. Does wearing spandex make you a hair band? Ok, then Queen, Aerosmith, Kiss, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and even Ozzy are hair bands. Cuz at some point, all of those bands had at least one member(usually the frontman) running around in spandex.
From Freddy Mercury to Mick Jagger, spandex baby.
Throw in Guns n' Roses too. The supposed 'anti hair band' band that actually came from the same LA scene all the others came from! And hung out and toured with all those bands.. Axl Rose was hair farmin' and glammed out in the classic 'Welcome to the Jungle' video. So was the drummer Steve Adler. Poor ole' popcorn..
And Axl ran around in spandex shorts a lot too... lol.. Hell, Jimi Hendrix wore some of the most colorful, glammy & outrageous outfits you will ever see on God's green earth!
I think ya gotta be very careful what you designate 'hair band'... Cuz VH never really fit that, to me anyways..

I like 3 Doors Down alot, they're from down in my neck of the woods
I really can't stand Linkin Park, they're terrible, they are part of what's wrong with music. The new Audioslave is awesome. As far as anything else new, the only things I can listen to is stuff like Slayer or Pantera, never see them on MTV!

Van Halen has the long hair thing going through the 80s. I think that's why my friend meant. He seriously goes "You like a hair band!? Oh my God!" when I told him Van Halen was my all-time favorite band. As far as Linkin Park is concerned, maybe the only reason I like their music is because my ex-girlfriend liked them. It kind of rubbed off on me. As far as "new rock", they were about as good as it got for me. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and others from the early 90s were great, but they're almost gone now too with the exception of that old/new Nirvana single and some Pearl Jam tours. Their glory days are over just like Van Halen's. I've learned that the best bands last for a long time (for the exception of bands where one of the members dies (ie Led Zep, Nirvana). Van Halen has lasted 20-25 years. Led Zeppelin would have lasted longer than 10 if it could have. AC/DC is alive and well after almost 30 years. Metallica has been around for 20 years at least. Those are just a few of my favorites. Its called chemistry. The members fuse to create one working heavy metal machine. Van Halen included.
How do I know when its love?
I can't tell you but it lasts forever.
How do I know when its love?
Its just somethin you feel together.

Hehe, if your friend thinks of VH as a hair band than he is a misinformed idiot, like many. Sorry, but thats a fact.
As far as great bands lasting, the Beatles where only around about 6, maybe 7 years tops! But their impact was made and is everlasting. Same goes for Cream.. They only lasted like 3 freakin years and there will never be a reunion bewteen those 3 amazing players -Clapton, Baker & Bruce. But they are legends and they changed the face of music and inspired everyone from Van Halen to Metallica. Same goes for Jimi Hendrix. That dude's career was like 3 and a half years!! But he changed the face of music too and reinvented guitar.. Or like Stevie Ray Vaghan. His career was only like 5 or 6 years and then he died. Oh well, shit happens. But you gonna tell me he aint one of the greatest ever?
Or Robert Johnson. That dude's career was 26 songs, thats it! Way back in the 1920's or something. But he has influenced just about every blues guitarist to come down the pike..
Longevity is nice, but that in and of itself dont make you great. If that where the case, Cher is the greatest artist ever cuz she has been around since the mid 60's and still releases hit singles and tours very succesfully..
I dont care if the artist is still around really...
Its the MUSIC that has to stay around and last. Every damn band ends one way or another eventually.
And when bands get longevity by selling their souls to the big coporation, slaving to MTV and bringing in tons of outside songwriters, well, they suck...
