I believe that Dave has said so in interviews, that Kilgore was indeed the Red Ball Jets guitarist, and that he had known Kilgore since high school.

...It's the BAND and Dave is really the cat that can front VH. He sang his ASS off and was really cool. No cheese here guys, this is filet Mignon! - Steve Lukather's comment after witnessing a Van HALEN 2007 rehearsal

Dave said in a 1994 magazine interview that he's known Terry Kilgore since junior high school and he wrote his first song with Terry.

I met Terry Kilgore in June 1992 when his band was playing at The Sunset Club in Sierra Madre, CA (Pasadena area). About a week later, he flew to New York to join Dave and work on "Your Filthy Little Mouth." ...

Check out "Right Tool for the Job" on DLR Band CD. Good blues tune! Kilgore is credited with the guitar work on that one.

There was a tune on there that had a bouncy blues riff that reminded me of "Bottoms Up" and "The Full Bug."

I think he really shines on the DLR Band album. He co-wrote and played on 5 of the tracks. And the two best songs on the album are his - 'Goin Places' and the masterful, mesmerising, COOLEST Roth song EVER!!! 'Black Sand'.

He was great on YFLM too - but a little watered-down maybe by Nile Rodgers, a little bit buried in the mix.

Apparently he ever toured until YFLM.
