Hmm, I wasn't a fan back then (not old enough), but I probably would have went on supporting both sides of the breakup.

The stories were too damn confusing, I'd just let the music speak for itself.

If we're talking about the original split in 1985, I was on Dave's side, but in all honesty I wasn't old enough to really understand what happened. Now I'm fifteen years older, and I still don't understand. But I don't hold any of this stuff against these guys, because it's not worth pointing fingers.

i wasnt but 15 or 16 in "85" but i remember it being dave wanting to move on, he thought he could do better,i remermber the band saying they were surprised because here they are...1984 had been their greatest accomplishment at that time,and dave decides to go on his own.that was the first thing i heard,dont really remember but i think that was from one of the band! a few months later i heard that they kicked dave out because if the group made 4 mill. dave thought the split should be dave-3 mill.
edd, alex and mike split the other 1 mill.
that i dont remember where it was from!

It was '85 that I first developed my multiple personality disorder. Same time that Vh came down with a Case of "LSD" (Lead Singer Disease.)

Part of me liked Ed, Mike, & Al but Dave has had some great tunes.

Then it Happened again!!

I'd have to say I was solidly on Ed's side for the original split--the second one I'm not so sure as I believe Ed now suffers from the same egomania that he has accused his former frontmen of having. Suffice it to say, though, I couldn't understand why Dave would jump ship. I don't buy his contention that Ed didn't want to work and wasn't anxious to put out a follow-up to 1984. Rather, I think Dave didn't like the direction the music was going and thought that he could do just as well or better on his own--we each have our opinion as to whether or not he was right. I know you guys probably think I'm saying this because I'm pro-Hagar which I am. But I wasn't sold on Hagar coming to the band in the beginning. I didn't think that it was a good fit despite the fact that I was a fan of Hagar as a solo artist. But, he came in, got the job done (well), and took the band to great commercial success. When Hagar left or was booted depending on what you believe, I began questioning Eddie's own ego and ability to work with someone who's popularity was rivaling his own. I'm not saying that Sam was more popular than Ed or anything like that but there's little doubt that Sam was putting his own stamp on the band and a lot of people forgot about him being a solo artist or replacing David Lee Roth--hell, a new generation of fans knew nothing but VH with Hagar. So, as for the subsequent splits, I can't say I'm squarely on Ed's side. I disagreed with Sam's departure, I disagreed with the way the whole thing with Dave went down in '96 (though I think he did act like an ass at the MTV deal), and I completely disagreed with the selection of Gary Cherone as the new lead singer. I think those things took place because Ed thought his music would triumph over such trivial obstacles. Well, it didn't. I'd say all and all, ego wins out in this whole soap opera.
