My question is if they don't retire now, when does it happen?
I gotta say I love 'Beautiful Girls,' but the thought of Roth singing it while pushing 50 seems more than a little silly...
Time isn't on their side, as it isn't for ANY band that manages to make it HALF as long as VH has...
The legend is secure...The image indelible...Platinum with TWO different guys...endorsements...Eruption...The Jack Daniels bass...FOUR bass drums and those monster solos...
If this ISN'T a good time to retire Van Halen as a four piece rock band, when will that good time arrive? And we all know it will...Can't stop...addicted to the shindig...

A legendary rock band isn't retired until one of the members is dead. Until then, there'll always be talk and hope of a reunion.

Achievements:
Rock and roll is a funny business; the best way to secure your legend is to die, but you have to make sure you die in the right way, and at the right time.
Not an easy proposition!
Eddie's and Dave's problem is that they weren't curteous enough to drop dead, they had to be selfish and keep making music after they split up.
Taken another way, I doubt Jim Morrison would have been as big a legend if he'd had the chance to age, get fat, go bald, make a few stinker albums out of their home context of the 60's and become irrelevant next to the next generation of rockers.

Unfortunately IMO it will take years before they are considered legendary again. 1996 was a major blow to their credibility. They would have been kings again if that would have worked. VHIII was taken as a slap at their accomplishments.
A lot of people still have a bad taste from III. It's gonna take awhile.

You know, rock is wierd like that. I'll say this much though - Dave seems to have an air of never wanting to grow up around him. He could be 65 and out there claiming he's still the ladies man even if he's a confirmed Viagra user by that time. He just seems like his attitude gets rediculous with age.
Of course Sammy is an older gent, but he seems to convey more of an air of maturity. The kind of guy who writes the songs that don't sound silly coming from a man in their 60s.
Hell, either way music is a harsh business. You're on top for a decade if you're lucky, but then you're suddenly old and the "cool" crowd was in diapers or grade school when you hit it big."Just once I'd like to do the right thing and not get punished for it."

Doesn't Mick Jaggar still sing "Brown Sugar?"
A couple of days ago, I listened to an interview Alex did with NPR and they played a clip from Eddie's solo spot on 1986's Live Without A Net. Alex was agreeing with the interviewer when she said it...
