What happened at the MTV awards '96 with DLR.
I've been listening Van Halen for a long, but never knew what happened then?

Depends on who you talk to. I can't give a definite answer because I wasn't there, and with the exception of Georgie, nobody else on here was, either. So don't listen to the "Eddie lied, Dave was cheated" horseshit. Personally I think guilt falls on both sides, but again, I wasn't there. Basically after they went backstage after they got their standing ovation, Eddie and Dave had a nasty falling out and it fell apart. Hopefully that's all in the past now. Here's to Van Halen in 2001!

At the press conference, Ed kept talking about his upcoming hip surgery - rather than speaking about reuniting with Dave.
Dave got pissed at Ed being a downer, and told him to stop. Ed said he wouldn't talk about the hip anymore, and Dave said, "fuckin better not."
Ed flipped out, and people had to seperate them from each other. And once again, their tenuous friendship was on the rocks.
In my opinion, Dave felt the media & people wanted VH back together so bad - that he felt at liberty to treat Ed badly (like the past). Thinking that Ed didn't have the guts to deny the fans what they wanted.
Dave was wrong. And Ed was wrong for thinking that the fans would accept a 3rd singer.

Firstly, Ed and AL were the ones manipulating the media; do a greatest hits package with a former member, give everybody the illusion that he's back in, pressure the sales, etc., continue to conduct auditions for a new member. Have you read DLR's book? I'm not saying it is the only word on the incident, but it makes perfect sense.
Secondly, what bad treatment from the past are you referring to?
OK, here's my opinion, let the flames begin...
I think the '96 reunion separation had to do with one thing only: Dave's voice. I think Ed and AL decided to string DLR along, making him believe he was back 'in' the band (to an extent, even DLR admits that he, "invited denial into the atrium", so it wasn't a complete B.S. job), and then decided to audition other singers when they weren't pleased with Dave's voice. The only problem was that they needed DLR to help sell the album (Mr. Danniels was certainly around to encourage them not to immediately dump Dave, and I ain't talking about Jack, either).
All I can say is that MWM and CGTSNM are by far the two best songs that have come out of that band since the 1984 album and are certainly stronger than anything on VHIII. Granted, DLR's voice is not what it used to be, but man, the music sounds like Van *&(^ing Halen, not Foreigner with Edward sitting in.
Allright, I'm rambling now. Late...

Ok, I'm gonna be the peacemaker here. I think we should all forget about the MTV Awards thingy and quit living in the past. The only things from the past we should look at are the music and good times. No offense to anyone of course.

This page has the Mikey NAMM rumour/report thing. If you look to the right there is a real video clip of VH coming on stage....Eddie claims they got a half assed ovation or something.
Looks more than half-assed to me. I ownder why MTV even has that clip linked there?

Hey Seenbad,
What's with the Blazers losing at home to the Jazz? We all know that as soon as the Lakers get serious, everybody else will be playing for 2nd place.

Seenbad,
I seem to remember the Blazers being ahead of the Lakers by 15 points in the 4th quarter of Game 7 last year also. I also remember the parade after the finals being held in Los Angeles, not Portland. See you over in Non-Music.

I think the guys were expecting Dave to act grateful, but realized Dave is Dave...He is who he is and he DID deserve to enjoy that ovation and it wasn't half-assed...even on t.v. that was obvious...The band had their pride and ego's hurt, I'm sure...
The funny thing is that they WERE surprised...They've known Dave for half their lives or more...you'd think they would KNOW this man by now...
If they can accept each other's eccentricities, I'm sure we are in for an AMAZING album and few more years from Van Halen...

I don't think the VH brothers manipulated the media at all.
They brought Dave back for a Best Of album - and the rest was playing it by ear.
They told Dave right up to the MTV thing that they weren't ready to announce a reunion yet. And that's right out of Dave's own book.
Dave got over-anxious. I don't think there is any doubt that after a standing ovation, and a rabid media - he felt that he was back in VH - no matter what. He felt that timid Ed didn't have the guts to say no.
So he started shooting his mouth off, and being bossy like the old days. As if he had never left VH. And thus he pissed Ed off.
I don't doubt that Ed didn't really want Dave back permanently - but I also don't doubt that Ed would have given the fans an album and tour with Dave if not for MTV.

The one thing that has not been mentioned yet is the Danniels factor. Ray had Gary Cherone as his hand picked successor even before Sammy was fired, and before the 2 new Van HALEN songs were recorded.
Both Dave's book and Eddie's interviews from the VD III era indicate that Dave & Eddie were repairing their friendship. Danniels knew he was in trouble. He'd been there before after all. He couldn't control Sammy Hagar, and had manipulated a feud between Ed and Hagar that had ultimately resulted in Hagar's firing in June. If he couldn't control Sammy, he knew he didn't have a snowball's chance in Hell of controlling Dave. Just as he had pointed Ed towards Sammy's weak lyrics, he exploited the only weakness he could find in Roth.... Dave hadn't sang in 2 years and vocal cords like all muscles, go out of shape if they are not used. Danniels planted the idea into Ed & Alex's mind that Dave would never be able to sing live.
The awards show itself.... all Dave did, as Beck rightfully pointed out later, was "being Dave", and any Van HALEN fan knows what that means. The key to Danniels manipulation was to let Eddie believe he was calling the shots, and the minute that standing ovation went up, Eddie knew he wouldn't be. That once again, he would be sharing the stage with the very guy who got him noticed in the first place. And while Mikey and Alex laughed their asses off at Dave being Dave, Eddie FROZE on that stage.
Yet with a national live TV audience listening, Eddie did NOTHING to kill the Van HALEN reunion story. Nor did Mikey or Alex.. although I'm sure they were convinced the reunion was on at that point. As Eddie would have been had Danniels not been around.
Flash forward to March 1998 - Van "Halen" releases their biggest failure and embarrassment ever.
And a few months later - "David Lee Roth has just released the best Van Halen album since 1984" - MTV
1999- David Lee Roth takes the classic Van Halen show that the fans wanted in 1996 on the road and recieves unexpected endorsements.... from Inside magazine and Valerie Bertinelli!
In those 3 years, as he absorbed the consequences of his bad decision, I believe Eddie realized that he had been lied to, used, and manipulated by Ray Danniels. Nothing drove this point home better than the fact that David Lee Roth could and did "cut it live". I believe it was at this point that Eddie finally pulled his head out of his ass and realized that Danniels had to go and Van HALEN had to return.
------------------
Eat Us And Smile: The Wrath of Roth
Van HALEN is Dave, Eddie, Mikey, Alex. Any questions?
