The main thing that bothered me about 3-4 was that they overdid the comedy angle. Parts 1-2 had funny moments, but it was quite a bit more subtle. The Joe Peschi character was starting to annoy me in part 2, let alone two other movies. Then they kept adding characters. By the time 4 rolled around, it was more of an ensemble/comedy type thing. Far from the origional idea about a fucked up, suicidal Vietnam vet cop and another, by the book cop nearing retirement. But that's the Hollywood way. Squeeze every drop of profit from a watered-down franchise until the money dries up. Then in a few years make a "prequel" or "reboot".

It had nothing to do with Donner, Gibson wanted Riggs to find Jeezus and they shot him down.

Funny, I just was watching 4 the other day and wondering if they'd ever do a 5th.
    "Suck a fat one, faggot."
-MikeL, showing off that sharp wit of his.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

-Derrick Jensen, "What We Leave Behind"

"You know what's weird to me is Christians who are against the death penalty. After all, if it weren't for the death penalty, we wouldn't celebrate Easter!"

They may be too old for this s**t, but that’s not going to stop Mel Gibson and Danny Glover from reuniting one more time for Lethal Weapon 5.

Gibson has been attached to direct Lethal Weapon 5 since taking the reins from longtime Lethal director Richard Donner, who helmed the first four films and was developing the final sequel when he died in July 2021 at age 91.

“I’m going to direct the fifth film in the Lethal Weapon series. Richard Donner, who did the other four, sadly passed away, and he was a good friend. He kind of tasked me with carrying the flag home on this one so it’ll be an honor for me to do that,” Gibson said during an appearance on Steven Oxley’s podcast. “He had gone a fair way with the screenplay, so we’ve used what was there and we kept poking at it. I’m pretty happy with it.”

Gibson, 68, described Lethal Weapon 5 as “funny, but it’s pretty serious too,” adding it “tackles a couple of hard issues.”

    Two things:

Lethal Weapon was a one and done film. There was nowhere to go after it finished and the Lethal Weapon was healed and no more.

Danny Glover was 41 years old when he was 'too old for this shit'. Let that sink in.

I should feel the same way, and I normally would. Like Roger Waters, etc, who continues to just be a douche.

With Mel, my Christian forgiveness comes in to play, and I'm willing to let him be rehabilitated. Sorry, Brett.

Thatís how most movies are until they become gigantic hits and people want to see those characters again.

The first one was just a sleeper hit. Yeah there was no real idea that was going anywhere.

You donít owe me an apology. You are absolutely allowed to feel anyway you want.

And the bottom line is Iíll probably wind up watching it anyway. Lol. But I wonít go to the theater and pay for it. How about that.

Most films just conclude the story of the film - and in cop films that's solving the crime/taking down the bad guys. LW was unique in that Gibson's character was the story; the bad guy was secondary to the incendiary, loose cannon Riggs. So when he finally decided he's not suicidal anymore, it was done and the very element that separated the film from other buddy-cop movies was gone.

Same goes for T2 and Aliens. You just run out of road. Once you've had a bigger, badder Terminator, another Terminator sent back in time. and Arnie has played both a bad and good guy where can you take the story next? And once you've gone from one alien against an unarmed crew in Alien and ramped that up to a slew of aliens against heavily-armed marines as well as a queen alien, where do you go? You can't go backwards as it's already been done and would also seem dull after the high-octane Aliens and just adding more aliens and guns in the sequel to a film dripping in them also isn't going to move the needle.

At least films like Superman, Star Wars, Blade, John Wick, Rush Hour, and Beverly Hills Cop leave room for taking the story and characters further.
