If memory serves, VHI, II and Women and Children First were all recorded live (music and vocals at the same time), then released without much post-production work. And how great did those sound? Especially the Remasters?
I'm talking more about the feel of the music. For instance: the part on Everybody Wants Some where Dave starts to say, " I like the way the line runs up the back of the stocking," but has to start over cuz the band plows over him with an interlude of their own (can you say wabi sabi?).
If and when VH makes new music - with whoever sings lead - I say they just hit the record button, play and sing til they've got 10 songs in the can, then call it an album.
Think Ed would ever do it again?

it would be a cool idea, but i doubt it. half of the urgency behind those first albums was that they were paying for the time in the studio. with 5150, that urgency is gone, and they can fuck around to their heart's content.
in terms of where eddie's head is at, i don't know. on one hand, he's more confident than ever before. but it also seems that he's let more and more of his control-freak nature surface. that's not necessarily a bad thing, it just doesn't lend itself to 'live' studio albums, jamming with quincy jones, flubs and improvisations. kinda sad

Yeah, some music not overly produced.
How about the left speaker guitar sound we all loved. I guess for me, I just love that classic Halen sound. A big part of that sound was the fact that a lot of that era was recorded live.

And on Ed's control nature, he did get rolled so much in the early days that I can see where he'd want things his way. Maybe VH needs a producer Ed respects (someone who's a musician like Fairbairn was?) who also records 'live' occasionally. But I have no idea if someone like that is out there. It'll probably never make their criteria list, but it'd be cool, and maybe a back-to-the-future kind of twist.

Even if VH ever releases an album again, no. No chance of it.

It would depend on how fast they wanted to get one out, but I'd doubt it.
