So I was in my hot tub, bein' a bum in the sun with a drink in my hand, listening to BOV1 and I was thinking about the 2 '96 songs. What's your take on what they're about? I've heard CGTSNM is about drugs. I think if you listen to Dave's lyrics in both of them closely, they're messages to the VH boys re: the '96 fiasco.

Not sure of their meanings 100%....But love them both. Sometimes I listen to them and imagine they are 2 new tunes off the brand new Van Halen album with David Lee Roth...(Hey I can pretend)

The 2 '96 songs are cool. I'm not sure about the meanings but I do know that they kick ass!

The two songs from BOV1 are great. As for the meanings, well...Dave makes it difficult as usual to figure that out. I think Dave basically wrote about the Van Halen and the music. 'You Can't Can't Get This Stuff No More'. Yeah, you can't get great VH music anymore.

It's obvious (to me anyway, I could be wrong) that if you listen to the words to CGTSNM, Dave is clearly talking about the '96 debacle, and the fact that Dave and VH weren't getting back together for a full scale reunion. As for Me Wise Magic, I'm not sure. All I know is it definitely fucking rocks ...
"One of the reasons I left Sabbath was because Van Halen was blowing us off the stage every night. It was embarrassing." -Ozzy Osbourne
"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.
If aliens came down and challenged us to a Battle of the Bands to decide the fate of Planet Earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion." -Tom Morello
"There is no heir to the throne of Eddie Van Halen. Nobody sits on that throne. Nobody takes that throne. Here's why it's different with Eddie: when a great guitar player passes, you just move on to another, right? But in this case, Eddie wasn't just a 'guitar player'. We're talking about a guy who changed culture and how we play guitar. He was like an alien coming in and fucking everything up so much that even the legends beforehand are like, 'Okay .. what is happening here? What sorcery is this?'" -Nuno Bettencourt

Exactly,
Dave couldn't write a song about something that hadn't happened yet ie:the reunion debarkle/catastrophe.
CGTSNM,sounds like a relationship of somekind either in the first person or the second.
CAN'T GET THIS STUFF NO MORE?? Is it
that obvious?

CGTSNM was about Dave back with VH. It was in his book (so I've been told). The lyrics totally relate to Dave bein' back. Dave was saying that you can't get Dave era music anymore. Doesn't really have to be about the quote/unquote debacle. I think it relates to the original break up in 84 and their mending of finces in 96 then Dave shooting himself in the foot at the VMA's.
As for MWM; well, I have no fuckin' clue!LOL That'd be standard no idea Dave material!DLRnazi's suck ASS.
Wanna trade boots? Go here for my list!

i think that CGTSNM is about the fact that they got dave to work with them again, and how he felt to be back, ie. "got me a date with a supermodel". it's also about working things out from their differences in the past "a slice at a time, like a pizza pie", and if it doesn't work out, fuck you, i don't need this shit again... "how many times does somebody lie, till patience runs her course, keep that in mind, when we say goodbye, cause you can't get this stuff no more". sorry for the novel, but that's my explanation.
i still have no clue what me wise magic is about, but it fucking rules. it's my favorite song by vh. the two 96 songs pale in comparison to any other vh song, imo. and the other vh songs kick serious ass, as well. the two in 96 had a pretty big effect on my taste in music.

Great topic - I'll throw in my two cents for what it's worth...Dave has never been much of a metaphoric lyricist...His stuff has usually been about attitude and poontang and normally fairly straight forward.
To me, both of these tunes reflect his attitude about the original breakup and his return to the band...Dave is Dave's biggest fan and both tunes seem to speak of a general confidence that HE is the man and HE's back (or at least he thought).
CGTSNM = Although the 1st verse seems like it might be metaphoric, I believe this just to be Dave bragging about his stature as a lady's man....The second part of the 1st verse, chorus and second verse seem to go straight to the issue. The tempers, the attitude of the breakup - the eventual realization that "You can't get this stuff no more"...Meaning Dave himself - his style, his attitude, his entertainment.
MWM = While the title may have come from a race horse..I believe it more likely that Dave dug that saying and found a way to apply it to himself...The entire song seems
to be a "Dave pre-amble" to the reunion that he thought was happening. The 1st verse being of the public's desire to have him back at the helm "I know what you're dreamin' / I have those same dreams"
"Reach up to the feet of God / Lookin for a sign / It was right here all the time, time, time, time." Basically says, Dave is the answer and he's been there all the time.
Me Wise Magic being his attitude towards his own magical ability to be the God of VH.
This reflects Dave's long-time belief that while Ed is an awesome writer and guitar God - Dave is the machine that makes VH work.
Some truth to this in my opinion due to the fact that Ed is just not a public-type person and can't make the machine run without some kind of "MOUTH" at the helm. Ed grew tired of this with Dave and eventually Sammy too....He finally got Cherone who was happy with standing in the background and letting Ed and Alex do all the talking...The problem is that John Q Citizen really doesn't want to hear Ed talk too much..I think everyone was a lot happier with VH when Ed was this quiet, humble guitar God with a boyish-grin who stood behind this ULTRA-Loud mouth, whiskey drinking, girl-chasing, karate-kicking, ego-maniacal windbag that we know as Dave....That's why people go to the circus and Dave was the ultimate ring-leader....

Jaymonster, are you my lost twin brother? My god my man...you took the words right out of my mouth once again. That's exactly what I felt MWM meant.
Just to futher the topic a little...I don't think Dave felt that he was back in the band back in '96. Alot of people believe that he actuallly signed on, and was ready to go with VH. But c'mon, he knew all too well that it wasn't going to work in Wally World. He was "hoping" that's for sure. But listen to the lyrics in both those songs, and you can tell he knew it wasn't going to happen. That actually was probably the first time DLR wrote lyrics with some message and meaning behind them with VH. And he did it brillantly. Re-read Jaymonster's post (especially the last 3 paragraphs). That says it all about MWM. Pure brillance. If DLR gets with VH again, these type of lyrics along with accompaning kick-ass music will put VH back on top.

Everybody thinks Wendy Williams is crazy, and well, NOW it is true but she has been talking smack about Diddy for a long time as has Katt Williams , 50 Cent, and others. I think Usher spoke to...
