this may be an abstract topic to some people- but i think others may know what i mean...
i think one thing that truly made VH music great, was that the music just had some amazing "moments"- when the music or the words just came together perfect- or when everything sounded so perfect, that it just didn't seem like it was music anymore... just a perfect mood or feeling... a "moment" (does anyone know what i mean? ) haha-
one example (since i was just saying in another thread how VHIII had some great moments) is in "one i want" when the lyric is "a good man- he's hard to find" and eddie's solo following fits just perfect... some parts of that song are so irritating (like Gary's annoying lisp- where did that come from?) - but some of that VH greatness is still there, if only for a short time...
another example on the III cd is in "ballot or the bullet" , when eddie is doing the slide guitar break the second time, and the electric fades in suddenly, and they pound into the second verse- what an awesome moment? i love that part!
so anyway- if you kinda' know what i mean- what are some of your fav' VH moments- i mean on recording- not necessarily when you saw them live... (this can mean any era- and i don't think this topic can spawn a "my favorite VH singer is better than your's" war, but we'll see...)zach sanders<br /><br />"My boy, we are pilgrims in an unholy land"

“On Fire” (I): Dave’s blood-curdling scream at 1:48
“Girl Gone Bad” (1984): from 4:18 to the end of the song, especially when Alex hit those toms at 4:25.
“Sucker In A Three Piece” (OU812): I love how Sammy sings “Sweet little wishbone…OH, YEAH!”
"Ballot Or The Bullet" (III): see Zach Sander's/55starfire's comment
More later…

The stutter in the Middle of "You Really Got Me"...
The guitar intro in "Hot for Teacher"...
The guitar intro in "I'm the One"...
The part on Ice Cream Man when the distortion kicks in.
I got laid to Woman and Children First when I was just a young lad... I think I lasted to when the vocals start on "...And Craddle Will Rock"

Almost at the end of 'Eruption' where he just taps it till the distortion comes on,MAREVELOUS!
The Bass line In 'On Fire' when Dave says 'Im On Fire!'Dun,Dun,Dun Awesome!
The Drum and Guitar Intro for 'Hot For Teacher',thats the greatest Drum play i ever heard.
The Whole story line of 'Love Walks In',beautiful epic, its so diffrent from Van Halen. If they had made the video for it,it wouldve been a classic, gives me chills.
'The parts in 'When It's Love' when Sam goes (Its just something that last forever/Its just something you feel together)then when the background vocals go LA,LA,LA,LA,LA beautiful stuff.
'Cabo Wabo' and It's hyms (Ouuuu/C'mon crash on the beach!/Ouuuu).
WHEN VAN HALEN RETURNS,THAT'LL BE THE GREATEST MOMENT.Rest in Peace, Ed.

The solos for A Year To The Day
The chorus and solos for Humans Being
These just do it for me everytime along with many more."Right Now.....Mike is thinking about a solo project."<br /><br />"Victory has a thousand fathers. Defeat is an orphan."

so much of romeo's delight- the awesome beginning (the best opening for a concert EVER!) and one of my FAVORITE eddie solos-
but the best is the interlude- when eddie hits the last harmonics-and dave and mike sing "feel my heart beat..." and they fade out...
and then it builds up slowly, and suddenly it just POUNDS into the most furious and reckless chorus that van halen ever layed on recording- "oh baby PLEASE- CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!!" AHHHH!!! ...
dave's last "baby... pleeease... oowww, baby- pleeeeeeeeeaaazzzzzuuuhhh...."
-and then, just the whole ending- especially when eddie hits those harmonics at the very end- it just screams!!!
WOW!!! that gives me chills EVERYTIME! amazing...

Your topic hits on the essence of the true genius of Van Halen. In my opinion the number one difference between VH's music and others music is that there are so many incredible musical moments throughout their entire catalog...there are probably close to 2000 total.
Harmonics in... On Fire
Drum breakdown in... Light Up the Sky
Flanger intro in... And the Cradle will Rock
Opening Drums in... Dirty Movies
The ending of.. Secrets
That guitar/drum riff just before the second verse in... Drop Dead Legs
The rythm guitar during the solo in... Good Enough
Those wailing eigth notes in the solo of...Balch n Blue
The outro of the Dream is Over
The riff before the start of the verses in Amsterdam
The intro to... Me Wise Magic
The solo of.... Humans Being
The ending of the guitar solo in... Josephina
It is fucking endless!!!!!!!!!

Way too many to list. I treasure every second of music VH has released.

Jeez, where to start ?
I just love the rawness of it and the fact that mistakes are left in the recordings.
But for me ???
The arrangement of songs on Fair Warning. I don't think they could have arranged them more perfectly.
Ed's solo on So This Is Love ?. It just filts the happy mood of the song perfectly.
The intro to 5150. I nearly stopped playing guitar when I heard this. It's just fantastic. I couldn't believe it was only one guitar.
The flanger on Unchained !!!!
The fills on Humans Being. I just can't explain how amazing I find them. They just give me a chill everytime. So melodic, so musical, so, dare I say, commercially written ? Just so what is needed on the song.
The general playing/solos/fills/everything Ed does on Year To The Day. If that song doesn't cement him as the greatest player of our time, then I don't know what does. Pure emotion, pure feel, fantastic haunting nature to the whole song. Lovely stuff !
The jam nature to the end of Can't Get This Stuff No More. Everyone seems to be doing their own thing....
Ok, I'll stop now. I have the whole Van Halen catalogue going on random play at the moment, and at this rate I will be listing every song....

I didn't know that Friedman was making Eddie's amps. Does that mean a Friedman amp is a lot like a 5150 amp? I remember at some point out I was going to buy the EVH stack and surprisingly my wife was...
