After listening to "Serious" a few times, I think it'll be pretty hard to beat as a first single by the new VH/Dave album. I'm not saying impossible, I'm saying pretty hard. IMO it ranks up there with MWM, but with a better song structure.
The dynamics are there, the sound is very contemporary, the back up vocals are very good. I'm still puzzled by the title for such an agressive song, though. Let me know your thoughts, guys.

gimme a break man, that song has it's moments but it's nothing compared to anything van halen can do... i mean, the music is decent but i certainly wouldnt wanna go down the road singing, "serious JUJU"... juju??? that's not lyrics i wanna hear... what happened to the fun sammy??? van halen and sammy couldnt get along with during the making of balance because eddie wanted to get more "serious"... while sammy wanted to stick with fun lyrics about smoking crack and shit... and yet in his post-van halen days we hear such serious songs as "little white lie," "serious JUJU" (i still can't get over that), "both sides now" and all that... now i'll admit, this is only stuff i hear off the radio because i have no desire to buy a sammy solo record... but i'm just saying, his lyrics are no fun to listen to... IMHO of course...

I've said I wasn't talking about the lyrics. Roth won't have trouble coming up with something better than serious Juju. Probably in his sleep he could find something better. But music wise, song wise, sound wise, melody wise, it is an impressive song, IMO. And I'm not even a die-hard Sammy fan, I've seen Roth solo, never seen Sammy solo. I've listen to some of the other songs. This is the best album Sammy has ever done, bar none. It beats some of the mediocre Van Hagar stuff ("Can Stop Loving You, Aftershock").
Now we'll see what Dave comes up with melody wise. It'll have to be better than DLR Band stuff, coz don't tell me that "Slam Dunk" is better than Serious Juju, I'll laugh my ass off!!!

    OK Tune
Cool opening. Someone said it sounds like Pink Floyd (Run Like Hell) and they hate Pink Floyd so they hate the song already. OK, very open minded.

After some "clever" lyrics from Hagar, the main riff comes in. Not a bad riff. Kind of cool, but after this repeatative riff, the tune falls apart.

    Where's the "hook" ?

    No singable chorus!!!

Just a bunch of , "du nuh nuh's:"...played at differnt places on the neck. Where's "shine on, shine on" (Humans Being) or something like that. It sounds like Sam played the first thing that popped into his
    head.

This is why Sam needs Ed.

I am a firm beleiver that if Van Halen would release a tune exactly like this with Roth on lead vocals, most hardcore DLR fans would say the song rocks. Just my opinion. Nothing to back it up but a gut feeling.
