listening to OPie and Anthony on WNEW 102.7 here in NY. They just said that Spin Magazine DID NOT put Van Halen on their top 50 bands of all time.
The pessimist says the cup is half empty. The optimist says it's half full. The pragmatist says its liquid contents are at 50% capacity. The ironist says its half full of air. The plumber says the cup must be leaking. George Carlin says the cup is too big. The Starbucks employee says its so you have room for cream. The conspiracy theorist says aliens took the other half. The baseball player says his cup is definitely full. MacGuyver says he can build a powerful explosive with it. The psychoanalyst says the cup is your mother. The punk sitting next to you also says the cup is your mother. The romance novelist says the cup is a willing receptacle to the wild gushing torrents of pure passion from the hard chiseled urn. The zen master says There is no cup. Pamela Anderson says her cups are definitely full. Me? Refill!

I have said it before, so I will repeat myself...

In the mythical "Book of Rock," there are certain bands that demand whole chapters, while there are other bands worthy of only a page, a paragraph or a footnote.

The Beatles, the Stones, the Who, Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Springsteen and E-Street are certainly "chapter-worthy" candidates.

Van Halen is "chapter-worthy." Van Halen reintroduced the world to American Rock Music, w/ blazing guitars, loud drums, head-jarring bass thumps and a loud, obnoxious and testerone-riddled front man. No other American act was doing what Van Halen was in 1978.

The Ramones, while a significant punk band, did not invent punk, did not perfect punk, and did little to advance music. Catchy tunes? Yes. Top 50 band? Maybe. At the exclusion of Van Halen - NO FRIGGIN' WAY!!

Millions of people didn't pick up the guitar b/c of the Ramones...they did b/c of VH. There were a handful of Ramones' immitators...THERE ARE STILL HUNDREDS of Van Halen wannabe's paying their dues. Van Halen has sold 51 million records in the US alone. The list goes on.

Musical taste is one thing (which cannot really be objectified, despite what I tried to do above)...but to say VH is not a top 50 borders on lunacy...or being tone deaf.

That's a horrible list BTW! What idiot at Spin came up with that?

I told you Kiss would make it, #32 and higher than the Who. Whatever.

Lists are lame anyway and they should be banned from all publications. It's a stupid ass popularity contest anyway.

Why is NWA on there twice?
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

Dude I disagree....the Ramones were an incredibly Influential band in Rock N Roll and were the FIRST PUNK band to record and release an album. Although I obviously agree that Van Halen should be in the top 50...there is no doubt in my mind that the Ramones should be there also...they influenced countless bands to and coutless guitar players to pick up their guiyars and learn how to play ROCK and PUNK!!

I would say that there may be as many or even possibly more signed and recording bands out there that were greatly influenced by the Ramones as they were by Van Halen. So please I can understand people being angree about a Top 50 list by SPIN magazine, which isn't a great mag anyway...but don't discredit the Ramones.

AND there is no way there are only a handful of Ramones imitators....every PUNK band...Metal band...Thrash Band....Alternative band..Post modern band...etc etc were influenced by the Ramones.....
