Sammy Talks Van Halen Reunion

Sammy Hagar interview in Guitar World

Guitar World's latest December 2002 issue, there's a really good interview with Sammy. Mostly what the interview's about is his new album with Waboritas "Not 4 Sale", his book "The Long Road to Cabo", his tour with David Lee Roth, and possible reunion with Van Halen. Here's the scoop of what he says about Van Halen;

"We could have a reunion, there's no question about it - the Van Halen of the "Van Hagar" era. We could definitely get it back together and have fun doing it and be for real if everyone's head is in the right place. It's just a matter of time, I'm sure. Not that I would quit the Waboritas, but to do a record and a tour with those guys again would be a great chapter in my book (laughs). It was such a great band and we got along so well for so long, and then it just went really bad at the end. I think once everybody gets their little twists out of the way, we need to do it one more time. Because on an artistic level, we just made awesome, awesome songs. And now we could really make great songs...

...So my point is, if we got together again, I think we could be better - if everybody's head was in the right place. And the only way I'd do it was if everybody's head was in the right place. If Eddie and I went and hung out in Cabo on the beach, fishin', jet-skiing, layin' in the sun and swimmin', eatin' tacos and drinkin' tequila, it could be like, "Wow I really like ya, Ed!" (laughs)...

...We know we can play! I can sing better now than I could when I joined Van Halen. Eddie should be just a good guitar player, or better. So we know we can do it, musically. But can we get along? That's my question. So I think that's inevitable, though I'm not thinkin' about it happening anytime tomorrow or next week. I'd rather keep my band together as long as I can, and keep goin' for my fans."

Hmm, Sammy wants to get Eddie drunk on the beach!! Sammy, just because Val put Eddie on the bench, doesn't mean he's quit the team!!

Exactly what I saw! Just goes to show that Sam isn't in "the know", or he's too stupid to realize the guy is trying to get sober...

Why hasn't this happend yet? You would think that if a DLR reunion was out of the question getting Sam back with Ed, Al and Mike would be the next logical choice and probably the best choice considering all the headaches that have occured with trying to get Dave back in the band.

You just have to wonder if Ed's heart is even in reforming Van Halen anymore. Some decisions should have been made by now and if Ed really wanted Sam back it should have gone down by now. Eddie what is up, dude?

I'm starting to think that maybe Eddie just doesn't care about music anymore. A theory I have, and this is just an idea, is that Eddie was really devastated that VH3 was a commercial failure. No matter what anyone says about that album, Ed put his whole heart and soul into it. It was his baby and artistic and creative statement. Maybe having that album bomb and get bashed so much by fans and critics took the wind out of his sails.

I would just like to clarify one thing here, he thinks it can happen if "everybody's head is in the right place" [img]graemlins/wtf.gif[/img]

Maybe they should smoke a couple of packs of Marlboros with that tequila while they are chumming it up at the beach.

Sammy talks about a VH reunion on the latest Metal Edge also, my opion is that he really wants to get back.

Sammy dreams of the cash flow he'd realize from the inevitable tequila tie-in to any future Van Hagar tour. "Bottlin' it for the fans!"

That said, IF there can be no reunion with DLR, and IF Van Hagar could put out a quality product (i.e., 5150 or Humans Being level quality, with no more than one cheesy ballad LOL), they should go for it.

I really think Sam just needs to call up Ed and give "him a how ya doin' man". I don't think Eds an asshole that he would hang up on him. Sam call Edward take him down to Cabo, have some fun, go down to the beach (just don't drink tequila)
and jam out a little bit. If this happens, it'll be Van Halens greatest album ever.
