Default Dates of Simmons demos, WB demos, VH1 sessions

I'm sure this is here somewhere, but I'm having trouble with Search, so I'll just ask outright: when exactly were these recorded?

Gene Simmons demos (late '76? early '77?)

The WB demos (some web pages say 10/26-27/77 but others dispute this)

The VH1 record itself (there's a gap in their gig dates from Oct - Dec 77 so I guess its in there, but exactly when?) Thanks.

I wish the band would release the "Warner Bros Demos" and "Gene Simmons Financed Demos" officially.

I'd rather that than a new album at this point...
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

Good topic. Truth be told, I don't think anyone has produced definitive evidence about when the 1977 demos were recorded. I think the October 77 dates just came from the "Blueprint" boot art. I'd hardly call that a reliable source.

I thought the Simmons demos came from the summer of 77, but again, anyone have solid evidence for this?

According to the 1st issue of the "Van Halen Encyclopedia", the "Gene Simmons Financed Demos" were recorded sometime around may of 1976 at Village Recorder Studios in Los Angeles. Two guitar solos were recorded at a later date at Electric Lady Studios in New York.

Nobody connected to the "Warner Bros. Demos" has spoken publicly about it's recording. It's said the dates shown on some bootlegs are more than likely inaccurate.

Thanks, but here's a webpage that disputes the 5/76 date by referencing club dates, and puts Simmons seeing VH at the Starwood in 11/76, which would imply the demo was made after that. (but before the 3/77 when Mo Ostin saw them)

I have never understood why they have not released these demos. They would help fill up a box set or they could just re-record the songs that have never been released. I know that I'd be first in line to buy it!

The band should release them as they are, there's no need to re-record them. Those demos are an integral part of Van Halen's history and it's a real shame they haven't been given an official release.

I agree. The demos are good and should stand on their own.

Speaking of dates, has anyone ever been able to pin down the Magic Mountain date? I know that it is supposedly Oct. 77, but again without a ticket stub, ad, or flyer, who knows for sure.

One clue is that if memory serves, they play ATBL at that show. EVH has said that he wrote that song after the Warner Bros. Demo was recorded.....

I dunno, I'm not a big fan of bonus tracks tacked onto an album re-issue. Outside of remastering, a classic album should be left alone in my opinion. Often bonus tracks can take away from, rather than add to a great album. The first 6 Van Halen discs are great as they are!

I'd rather the band released a separate disc of rare tracks...

... that is unless the original albums were each released with a second disc featuring the bonus tracks.

OK, looking at this page of boots, it says the demo were done 10/26-27/77

    http://www.vhboots.com/

And going by some interviews with Eddie, he says the demos were recorded in a day or so:

    http://www.vhlinks.com/pages/intervi...h/gu072378.php

There's a hole in VH's gigging schedule from Oct '77 to the end of Dec '77 when they played the New Years eve shows at the Whisky, so obviously it's in that gap somewhere. So I guess it's plausable that the demos were done Oct 26-27 1977.

But when was the actual VH1 record recorded? It would be between 10/27/77 to 12/30/77, but does anyone know specifically when?

(I think I remember reading somewhere that it was only 10 days or so to record)
