Me Wise and Can't Get...vs VHIII

I was just listening to those two tunes from
BEST OF and I think Eddie's work on those songs it's great. He sounds wild and innovative again. I don't own VHIII and the songs I've heard from it on the radio I disliked because of Gary. But overall, how is Eddie's playing on III?

III doesn't sound anything like the final two Dave songs or the final Sammy song (Humans Being). III would have been a million times better if it had been recorded with the sound quality of those three tunes. Those three tunes sound dynamic where III sounds flat.

As for EVH's playing, I'd suggest downloading a few tunes and deciding for yourself.

I'd say Eddie's playing is definately still fresh on III, as it is on MWM. Some like it, some don't....but at least it isn't some stagnant rehash from albums past.
I'd say the time Eddie's playing got a little stale was around the 5150, OU812, and still FUCK eras. Perhaps he was too interested in keyboards then. But with III, although he was doing all kinds of different things with the album, his guitar playing sounded very fresh and at the very least, interesting. Eddie's a unique guy because not too many aging rock stars can still come up with some cool shit.

The sound quality on VH3 is nothing like the two Dave tracks on the 'Best of' release. EVH is an amazing guitar player who has stood in front of very loud amplifiers for 20+ years. I don't think his hearing is as fine tuned as a pro producer. In other words, VH3 is the worst sounding VH record to date IMHO. Not that the music wasn't good, you just can't really hear it. I don't care that Mike Post is credited as being the producer, VH3 was EVH's baby all the way.

Me Wise Magic , Can't Get This Stuff No More and Humans Being are all Great songs. Van Halen III in my opinion does not compare to any of the bands earlier recordings. Patchy is probably the fairest way to describe III ...

I think Ed's playing was very fresh and unique for MWM and CGTSNM, and equally for VH3, just in a different way. He got a little more bluesy, and slowed it down a little on 3 (Year to the Day, Once). I think his 'fresh' sound was lost after Fair Warning, but came back for Balance, and the '97 songs. I'd love to see what he's coming up with now.

I totally agree with you, Strungout.
There wasn`t anything new in Ed`s playing for a long long time. But VH3 has some incredible guitar parts on it.If you like the record or not, nobody can say that Ed doesn`t have it anymore.

I think Ed`s more into "musician`s music" right now. Music that`s from musicians and for the likes of musicians - many parts you don`t get first time around, and not so catchy sing along songs. There is just no way Ed would write a song like running with the devil these days. As much as i love this song this is sad, but as a guitar player i can understand this opinion and respect it.

hit the nail on the head!! the guitar work is pretty damn good in my opinion.they just needed a better voice to go with it!!not that chereone CANT sing, just not with van halen!!

I tell you ehat the problem is. If VH3 still sounding as it does but was done by a new, up-coming band I'd say we'd all feel differently about it. The fact is that it shocked many of us that Van Halen had taken this new musical road. Generally if the Van Halen part was taken out of the equation it is a very good album with well written songs and a great musical feel.
In my opinion if Van Halen took the energy it stoped at when Me Wise Magic was recorded and possibly go a little harder to suit the times, I'm telling you right now we are in for one hell of a Van Halen record that will make their mark in the 21st Century.
