"Oh, fuck no. I saw that thing from Australia. It was so God awful. I was so embarrassed. I couldn't stand it. It was just not what people want from Van Halen, obviously. The poor guy's singing Roth tunes, Sammy tunes, and it just doesn't sound right. Some of them sound flat fucking stupid. The band looked stupid. I was just wondering if we looked that stupid sometimes." - Sammy Hagar when asked if he was tempted to see the current Van Halen lineup live, from Rolling Stone Network, March 24, 1999
"Well, I've heard it...it's sad actually." - Sammy Hagar when asked his opinion on Van Halen 3, on the Howard Stern show March 9, 1999

Like everyone else, Sammy is welcome to his opinion. And I'm welcome to disagree with it.
I wonder if Dave has ever really listened to Sammy or Gary, or if Sammy has ever really listened to Dave or Gary? Because really, they're conditioned to hate something before they've ever heard it, so I don't put alot of stock in their opinions of each other.

Well, Dave has certainly 'heard' Van Hagar over the years. He doesn't want to hear it, but he has, let's say on radio or in videos on MTV.
In his book on the section where Dave talks about how things went down in '85, he said "the music started to turn morose, and you can hear that on their suceeding albums."
So, I guess Dave has heard Van Hagar but never really listened.

Hey, for once I actually agree with Sambo.
VH3 was sad.
The tour was sad.
AND YES, they did look stupid with Gary.

THE VH III album was not very good!!
The tour was actually refreshing from how many years of the same old songs in every show. It was good to hear somthing different from the band. They still have it musically but it now is just a question of who the voice will be. Gary gave it a good shot. Being the 3rd lead voice in VH was no picnic. Even if Gary would have been great he was destined to fail because of expectation! Bash him all you will but I don't care if it was the best voice in the world the fans still will not be happy unless it's Dave or Sammy. So VH get it over with, get the boxed set out, do the reunion tour grab the money.. the music industry has changed there is no way VH will rise to the top again so just please the fans and get it over with. End of story.

I disagree I believe Van Halen can rise to the top again! If Bon Jovi can do it as well as they have with this album VH can DEFINITELY do it if things are done right!

Morose? I don't see where Dave was coming from with this one, other than maybe saying, "The music started to sound like I wasn't in the band anymore, which means I can't like it and have to make it look like I'm still the winner of that breakup even though they moved on and had four #1 albums without me."

I think what Dave meant is that the music certainly did not have the same power and punch as the first six did. Now, mind you, Dave is only talking of what he hears on radio and video. So, at the time, Van Hagar were releasing mediocre, power ballads as their singles, while the more rock n roll stuff could only be heard on the albums.
Of course, Sam fans will never get this. But, if ya only heard songs like "Why Can't This Be Love", "Love Walks In", and "When Its Love".
Sure, I could say the music turned 'morose', because that's what those songs were.

Okay, I'll bite.
Why Can't This Be Love is a morose song??? Not to me it isn't, it's an uptempo rock song that gets me going.
And Love Walks In is "morose"?? It's about being in love, the greatest feeling in the world. How you equate that with "morose" confuses me.
And by the way, I'm not a Sam fan, I'm a Van Halen fan.

I'll agree with ya Vinnie on those tunes being morose. If you became accustomed to Van Halen sounding like they did on their 1st 6 albums (which I did), then these tunes do sound a little sappy. Now there's definitly Van Hagar tunes that I definitly dig...Pleasure Dome, Judegement Day, Feelin', Poundcake, AFU. But there's some I would consider morose IMO.

I wouldn't lump "Why Can't This Be Love" in with those other two - it is an uptempo song. And I don't think "morose" was referring to the subject matter of the song, but instead the music. And I don't know if "morose" is the right word, but that's the word that Dave used in his book, and to him, I guess when you've been used to working with songs like "Unchained" and "Dance The Night Away", I guess that music could seem "morose". Certainly not what I prefer to hear coming from Van Halen.

Well, if you call morose focusing more on crafting of subtle melodies and inclusion of more maturity in sound as opposed to going full blast with all the youthful vigor of a 20 year old, okay, I'll buy it.
Morose isn't the word I would have used though.
And I third the motion that WCTBL isn't a song to really group in there with the rest.
