I always knew Mike liked Sammy a lot, but I wasn't really sure what he thought of Roth. I read an interview from '95 with Mike from the fine people at VHlinks. Man, he shit talked Dave the whole time. Talked about how he couldn't sing worth a shit and basically that most of his idea were horrible for the band. Doesn't look like ole Dave has too many people in his corner. Maybe I'm wrong.

This is a really interesting interview, because more than any of them, I really take Mikey at face value. It's not the first time I've heard him say that he was the last one to agree with Dave returning. His telling of speaking to Dave on the phone for the first time is really revealing.

Everytime I listen to my bootleg of the Donnington show in 1984, where Dave refers to Mikey as the "little man" after his bass solo, I always wonder if this pissed Mikey off. Maybe I'm off base, but it just sounds like Dave is putting Mikey down. And Mikey had to be aware of how important he was (and is) to the band in terms of covering for Dave's vocals live, yet he never got all the fame and credit the others got.

At some point Brett is going to be putting up another Michael Anthony interview in the interviews section which is from 1981, people should keep an eye out for that. Mikey makes some interesting statements about the limitations of his role with the band.

I think Mike likes DLR. Mike was probably more shocked than anything to hear DLR on the other end of the phone and that he was working with ED. I dont think in his mind he was ever going to work with DLR again.

Surprising comments nontheless. I had forgotten about that interview.

Mike's one of THE nicest guys in the world, and I'm sure he doesn't hate Dave, but I'd guess he's not exactly on the best personal terms with Dave. Ed has said they never became real friends with DLR, so I'm sure Mike's the same way. But from the looks of it, they got along fine in the 'old' days. But I wasn't there, so I don't know.

I can't believe Mikey hates anybody. I'm sure Mikey and Dave got along well during the original Dave years, but I'm sure Mike was a little bugged by some of Dave's comments ("little man" and whatnot...). One thing I can say though is that Mikey can put his personal feelings aside to make good music with anyone.

Does it really matter? It isn't like this is a new band in search of fame and fortune again...When Dave and the boys first hit the airwaves and made a name for themselves over the years and struck gold with their music, do you actually think they got along then?
HELL NO! So why should Mike,Ed,Alex feel any different now? MONEY and for the sake of saving the name VAN HALEN is the ONLY reason that a possible album/tour with Dave COULD happen...that is it!!!...this is not a kiss and make up moment... An example on how a great band can get along for a little while and make a shit load of money, THE EAGLES comes to mind! Can't say the same for the Stones cause they actually respect each other...

I've always got the impression from interviews that Mike wasn't too fond of Dave.

He and Sammy always got along though I believe, he even went to see one of Sammy's concerts a few months ago.

I have met Mike three times and in conjunction with all his interveiws, I can honestly say that Mike does not hate anyone. This man is so grateful for the lifestyle he lives and the opportunity of a lifetime. He is so grateful to find a great wife and have two great daughters he is so proud of. With that said, I think Mike likes Dave but obviously felt burned after he quit in 1984 . . .leaving their status in doubt at the peak of their career. Being that their success still flourished after, it became water under the bridge. Mike is definitely great friends with Sammy, but his commercial success lies in the hands of Eddie and Alex. He would never bite the hand that feeds him.

Seriously though, does Dave have any longtime friends that we know of?

I've never heard anyone mention one in any interviews, ever.

This just goes to show you should not believe everything you read.Mike`s interview comes across very honestly, like he`s really telling the truth.Or he`s a very good liar and has been told answers for certain questions. But I believe it.It shows how Roth and Hagar twist things around to suit them and try to put the blame on Ed and Al.Now I`m not saying that they are entirely blamless but it makes you wonder when you read in Mike`s interview about the Hagar split, it sounds pretty amicable as splits go.Especially as they seem to have been polite with each other at that funeral.Remember Gary also left the band but he hasn`t had a bad word to say about anything (yet)!!!So it just put`s Hagar and Roth`s comments in a different light.

Dave makes it very clear in his book that he doesn't like friends. The part where he builds the little boat and kicks it off his porch. Maybe its bullshit but you never know?

Hellohawk- You raise a very good point. After 25 years, who are David Lee Roth's friends in the industry? Besides Howard Stern, I can not name one other person from the last 25 years in music they still say David Lee Roth is a friend of theirs. Interesting point.

How about "Six Gun," i.e. Puffy? If I recall, Dave was seen at one of his parties not long ago.

This is a little off the topic but I saw an interesting quote from Mike in that interview Glenn posted.

"MTV plays their game of "You scratch our back, we'll scratch yours." "

Just thinking back to the "bands no longer with us" bit that MTV did at the video awards, it makes sense now that it is possible that VH refused an appearence and consiquently got flamed at the show. Interesting that Mike actually said it.

And also, I always thought Mike was one of the most excited people about a possible DLR reunion. I knew he liked Sammy but I always thought he was psyched about getting back to the "good old days" again. Makes you wonder a bit about his recent interviews - he seemed really excited about who the new singer is and that isn't exactly consistent with his attitude in this interview.
