Just checked out a link at melodicrock.com to pollstar.com.

They have the Top 100 tours of 2002 listed.

Sam/ Dave came in at #50 with $9.6 mill. gross. They averaged 7,700 fans/ show and $240k/ show.

Total #'s as anticipated seem somewhat disappointing. Just in comparison- VH 3 tour grossed around the same. Balance brought in roughly $25mm 8 yrs ago with much cheaper tickets than most of today's tours. The N' Aeroshit Boys brought in $41mm in '02 (not bad for them since the boy band fad is fading).

Wow, worst than I expected, but look at the "newer" acts than finished well behind them, with some of the older acts. Not bad, I guess.

Keep in mind the total number of shows played.

Sam and Dave did a fraction of what some of these acts did. Aerosmith played basically all year as did a number of others.

Ticket prices also effect totals. Paul McCartney, the Eagles and The Stones tickets were in the $100 plus range, while Sam and Dave were in the $40 area.

Also, Sam and Dave were not exactly riding a media push, or pushing new material. Radio, TV and print had little to work with from either guy. It doesn't help ticket sales when no one knows your coming to town. Frankly, they are lucky they sold as many tickets as they did.

I know all is right in the world when the "Tim Conway and Harvey Korman - together again" show did better than Alanis Morissette. Rock on, Dorf!

One thing really impressed me in this list.
Aerosmith #7 - $49 mil
Rush #16 - $44 mil

Rush only $5 mil behind Aerosmith!
Considering the amount of compromise, marketing, outside songrwiting, sugarcoating, and all around selling-out Aerosmith has done, and seeing Rush only $5 mil behind... is really a strong performance for a band who's the complete opposite, the model for integrity.
One reason to rejoice and keep the faith!

Of course, the economy had a huge impact on who was going to see what... I passed on the "Who" at $125 a pop because it was so close to me blowing the $50 spot on the Sam and Dave tour. That and the death of Entwistle... Figuring in refreshments at $8 a pop, and you got a couple of car paytments racked up in a show...

I don't know how anyone can be dissapointed in that statistic. Look, those are good numbers. It wasn't a van halen tour, it was a tour with the two former van halen singers so pulling in almost 8 thousand people a show is good.
