I know many of you are praying this Roth thing goes through, and I would look forward to that as well. It would be huge, grab the rock and roll world by the balls. Great if it happens. But...
If it doesn't, and Roth and the brothers can't get along once again, it's just a crying shame Sammy is not in VH.
Since the break in 1996 (aside from the two Dave songs on Best of) Sammy and VH have kinda struggled without each other.
Listening to Sammy's new album, which includes some great songs, I know VH would be all over the radio and all over the tube, and al over everywhere just like in 1995 when "Balance" struck if the two were together.
10-13 has some great songs, and Sammy, despite taking a pretty good hit to the chords, still sounds good. Just imagine Michael Anthony singing background on some of those tunes, and Eddie polshing them up, cuttingout the fat and making them bust-ass.
To me it's simply a waste these two are in separate camps. I know, I know. They're coming back with Roth. But are they?
If this reunion doesn't go down, it will sadden me to see Sammy make good music, but have it unrecognized because most of the general public just ignores the album because 'Hagar' is attached to it, and VH do nothing and disappear.
If these two were back together they'd be kicking ass, on the charts and standing tall amongst the teen-bopping, latino-swinging, Limp_bizkit rap/rock/crap.
"Deeper Kind of Love" would go Top 10, but it would be the second single. They always kick off records with a rocker. Ed and sam would have another Top 10 with the first and riding high.
But this is all a dream.
Good luck with Roth.
Make it happen, or the M-TV spoof-skit will remain in the public's minds. While you could be selling the standard 5 million with Hagar.

Depends on the story you read. General proven truth is Ray Danniels got into the ear of the brothers VH and built up any of the little disagreements the band had into huge, knock down fights.
Honestly, would you be pissed if your guitarist told you he thought you needed someone else to write the vocals for you? I would.
Would you be pissed if they knew you had a divorce coming and a contractually obligated hits album with Geffen, but they still insisted it was you wanting to be solo again? I would.
Would you be pissed if your wife had a baby and instead of being with her you had to go record a song for a movie soundtrack no one cleared with you first? I would.
No, Sammy wasn't innocent in the deal, I'm not saying that. But some of the events showed that the brothers started treating him like he wasn't part of the band long before they made it official.

Sammy would do well to hook up with better artists, but I can't think of a bigger waste than for him to hook up with Van Halen again.
It ran its course: personally, musically, and professionally.
There was poison in the studio.
And Ed has said that Sam was difficult in one way or another all the way back to OU812.
Sam needing a personal, vocal producer for the 1991 album is one example.

To mister Stuff No More and mister dolphmurph, it is in my opion that Mr. Hagar used the brothers to work his ass up the musical ladder again. In a lot of interviews he gave on tv, as i seen it in Holland, he crawels for Ed and Al, saying that musically they are on the same level, but instate he is still playing his own song Eagle Fly on ever tour they do. And than of a sudden when all the appointments are made, he started to back off.
No I think it's for the best that they are no longer working together. I wish Sammy the best, and may he have a great live in music, but let VH be VH and for my hope with DLR again.

Actually, EAAAD, Eagles Fly was a Sammy song produced by him and Eddie for the I Never Said Goodbye album, on which Eddie played bass guitar.
As I recall hearing before, Eagles Fly was originally slated for appearance on 5150, but it never got worked out right and was replaced with Dreams instead. Can't verify that one, but while in VH, most of the Sammy solo material he made were songs VH never got to work as a band.
Since half of VH had a hand in Eagles Fly, that one is a song I'd almost consider the closest thing to a VH song without actually being one.
But I can see your point. I think Sammy joined VH not to work his way up the ladder - at the time he was coming off a very successful album (Voice of America) with a very successful hit (I Can't Drive 55), and probably would have had a repeat performance. Granted, he would not have grown musically to the point he is at now, and probably no one would have cared about him now had he not been in VH, but I don't know that using the boys for his own benefit was what went through his mind. He's been quoted as saying he'd only be in a band again (after the Montrose experience) if it was a lot of fun, and VH was a lot of fun - it just ended bad.

Achievements:
Sammy seems happy right where he is, and with his desire to control his career, and his business commitments with the Cabo Wabo Club and his tequila, I don't think he'd want to be back in VH. But on Planet Van Halen, who knows what tomorrow may bring.

stuff no more, your initial post on this topic nailed it perfectly; much as i love VH, everytime i think about how it ended with sam - particularly the brothers not having any compassion for a guy who wants to be at the side of his pregnant wife and bringing roth in through the back door - i get pissed.
it's beyond me how ANYONE could side with/believe the brothers over how it all ended ("sam's got a shitty work ethic" puh-lease!).
let's just hope the band gets its shit together with roth; and this much i will agree on with roth supporters: they'll make 10 more albums with roth before they make one with sammy. although i think the relationship's mendable, the brothers will never admit they lied about the breakup, and nothing short of that admission would bring sammy back into the fold.

Sammy with a bad work ethic? Please, why don't you smell what you've been shoveling.
I've seen Sammy at least three times live and the man has given 200+ percent in his performance everytime I saw him. The last time I saw him was at the Hard Rock Live in Orlando. The show was supposed to be a short warmup for the Red Voodoo Tour. But he got into the fans firing up during his performance and gave a full blown concert that went for at least two or so hours. He definately gives the fans their moneys worth. Hell, he even signed autographs while he was singing. How many musicians do that for the fans? Not many I can think of , besides Sammy. I also want to point out that Van Halen never really had a lot of songs or albums actually hit the #1 spot on the Billboard charts until Sammy came along(No disrespect intended to David Lee Roth who I also hold high regard for as a vocalist) But I just wanted to give Sammy the credit he is due. I've read so much BS on these boards of people trashing him. Give the man some credit and respect I say!

I'm not trying to put Sammy down.
I'm pointing out that he and Ed are on different pages. It became fully apparent when Ed got sober - but the problems were there all along.
When you have a problem with someone's lyrics and work ethic - among other things. Well, that's poison.
Sure, Sammy works hard. But for whatever reason, I think there is plenty of evidence to suggest that he wasn't exactly inspired to go the extra mile in Van Halen.
Why would he when he was just the lyric boy?
And this stuff about Sam's pregnant wife is just too much. Doesn't Van Halen have deadlines?
What? It was just too much for Ed to ask Sam to fly in for one day (and fulfill the band's obligations) on a song?
Like Sam's wife was on her death bed or something.
What's obvious is that Sam didn't want to do the song whether his wife was pregnant or not.
Sam and Ed were not getting along at all.
Ed had no obligation to tell Sam about Roth. They were only jamming together. Ed had no idea if Dave would work out. And the intention was just a song for the Best of album.
What's so evil about bringing back your original singer for one song (which became two upon Dave's request)?
Okay, obviously in the process - Ed started to like Dave, and at that point he called Sam to tell him.
How else was Ed supposed to do this?
Was he supposed to call Sammy as soon as Dave walked into the studio?
Sam was against the Best of album - so Ed had no obligation to tell Sam anything - whether it was Dave in the studio, or the corpse of Elvis.
When Dave started to work out - well, then Ed called Sammy to tell him. Makes sense. Why tell Sam anything when Ed had no clue if Dave could even sing properly yet?
Now, if Ed and Sam were still getting along -then it would have been nice for Ed to tell Sam right off the bat. But they weren't getting along, so what do you expect?
Ed's not going to call Sam and say, "hey, bud - Dave's over right now. Thought I'd rub your face in it."
I'd say Sammy was on his way to being canned whether Dave was back or not.

Ask Eddie the same question for during For UCK when Val was pregnant with Wolfie.
What's good for the guitarist is good for the singer, or so they say.

Well, there's kind of a difference because the song Humans Being was being done for a movie soundtrack.
Ya know, Ed and Bruce Fairbairn did most of the work on this song. They even helped Sam write the lyrics.
Sam just had to fly in for one day and bang out the vocals & lyrics - but he acts like this was too demanding.
Maybe Ed should have called Roth sooner.
Ya know, do I care that Sammy and Dave are strong willed? No. That's what makes them cool.
But it's Ed & Al's band now. And if you can't get with the program, or if you want to act belligerent with them - then you can expect your pink slip.
No different than Paul Stanley & Gene Simmons axing one of their various Kiss members over the years. They don't need a reason.
But it seems to me that Ed had plenty of reasons. Now if you want to call him a liar - that's fine. But I've never heard a bad word said about him (except from people on websites).

Let's not forget that even the guy mixing Balance said Sammy spent the least amount of time in the studio. He was in at 3:00 and had to leave by 6:00 because he always had a dinner reservation... Even the producer and mixer questioned Sammy's commitment to the projects. Sammy moved his entire family from CA to Hawaii, it almost seemed like he was moving aways from the band.

Not highs as in a nasal, treble term (think Boston-ish cocked wah tone), but just pure high gain. Take Neal Schon for an example. He's used a shitload of gain the last decade or so to compensate...
