The club was jointly owned by Sam, Mike, Ed and Al at one point before the split... it was in financial ruins and Sam tried to put it back into shape but the Brothers wanted out rather than invest something like $300K to pay back taxes and money owed suppliers. Somehow the brothers also forced Mike to divest from the venture as well. At some point the Brothers and Mike signed away their interest in the place and Sam engaged in a joint venture with some guy in Mexico and together they built the place back up to it's former glory... No idea if there was any legal waivers in the breakup of the former corp that VH had in holding Cabo Wabo Cantina but there may have been legal allowances that supercede the recent trademarking activity... plus I'm sure Sam has some risidual rights to some of that stuff as a result of his tenor in the band... only the lawyers know...
Woke up this mornin, got Blue Moon in your eyes...

I was there 2 weeks ago (Mexican Meltdown!) and I was wondering the same thing. The one thing I CAN tell you is that place is the Sammy/ Van Halen Hall of Fame. Everywhere you look its Van Halen pictures, statues, autographs, and yes the famous paint from the Eddie Van Halen guitar striping. Funny but when I was in there I wasn't thinking about all the bullshit of the breakup, I was thinking about how AWESOME it was to be surrounded by all that Van Halen stuff. And YES the show ROCKED

I suspect that this is allowed since the brothers get a chunk of the profits if Sammy ever opens another Cabo Wabo. In return for this provision, Sammy gets to continue the "VH theme" if you will. I find it interesting how Sammy always whines like a Baby about this part of the divorce settlement. Obviously, the VH brothers know a big part of the drawing power of Cabo Wabo is the Van Halen nostalgia, therefore they feel they are entitled to any future profit from it. Its just being a bit Business savy! So quite whining about it Sammy! Aren't you rich enough?

I would say zero percent of Cabo Wabo is Van Halen nostalgia. Sammy fans go there who may happen to be Van Halen fans too. I doubt you can find 10 people who have gone down there in the last 6 years or so to see Van Halen pictures. And I doubt you can ever be rich enough or have enough money. What is this BS that people put on here all the time about selling out and making money. This is a bad thing? Why do you care how much money someone else has? My god what do they teach children these days.

After checking out Sammy's website and seeing a few pics of the Cabo Wabo Cantina stage, I was reminded of something that, as far as I know, hasn't been addressed (and if it has, my apologies). On the left side of the stage, part of the wall or backdrop is STILL painted in red, with the black and white stripes, a la Ed's guitar. Now, with recent trademarking by Ed, does this mean Sammy has PAID to keep that backdrop or has Ed given him permission to keep that, or what?

Funny thing, there are 4 metal sculptures that is supposed to be Van Halen. Ed Al Mike and the last one looks suspiciously like Dave, not Sam. I thought that was weird when I was there in 95.

I was in Cabo San Lucas in 1996 and we went in to the bar to check it out. It was dead at the time, but I noticed several platinum albums of the Roth era hanging on the walls. Are they still down there as well?

What's even stranger, is that when my sister visited there a couple years ago, she asked one of the employees if Sammy Hagar is there ofter. . .
To which the employee said "Who?" And she was NOT kidding. One of the Cabo employees had no fucking clue who "Sammy Hagar" was — I find it hard to believe.

If you like cool, rock music, check out REVERY. We've put out two albums, and an EP. We were signed back in '06 and toured the US (our single Popstar Wedding was all over the radio back then). Our latest album, Adora De Phonic is available on Itunes, Amazon, etc.

I’ve been to Cabo Wabo a couple of times, once when Sammy was with the band, and once just two years ago. I am not a Sammy fan, but a huge Van Halen fan, and I thought the place was still very Van Halen-esque. The manager was even wearing a Van Halen III t-shirt. The place still sold VH t shirts and rare VH vids. But, Sammy was coming in the next day and I overheard the manager telling the employees in the gift shop to take down some of the VH stuff! I don’t know if Sammy had a problem with them selling VH stuff or what, but it was kind of weird. For you Sammy fans: I sat and talked to the bar tender for a while and asked him if he ever met Sammy. He was this little old Mexican guy and said he has picked Sammy up from the airport a bunch of times, he kept calling him “Senior Hagar”, and kept going on about what a great guy he is, and then he gave me and my wife free Waboritas! I thought that was pretty cool. Other than the Guitar Center on sunset, Cabo Wabo is really the only official VH shrine open to the public that I’m aware of. If you’re a VH fan of both eras, you should try to get out there.

I, unfortunately have never been there. That is one place on my wish list. As for the VH-oriented stuff in there, Eddie probably doesn't care that it's there. He's got enough stuff on his plate this days.
