    hello all...

do you guys think this next album with roth will be the last go-around for the band? i really hope not.

i'm just not certain that the guys wanna end it now..just do one last with roth and then hang it up. i thought they would do at least two more times ya know? i think the MTV deal in '96 and everything with Cherone (i thought he did great considering) has forced van halen's hand back to dave. now, when this stint with dave is over...i think it is plausible to say that this will be how our halen ends

maybe this is the end of the line....god i hope not....this wait is soooo long

    tomorrow is rothtober!!

we should be hearing the new dave stuff...so new it ain't finished remember?

    ciao friends..

Honestly, I think we're getting one album and one tour with Dave and then there's a good chance that will be it. I have no idea why, it's just a gut feeling I have lately, but I'd be more that happy to be 100% wrong.

I tend to agree with Glenn, 1 album and a long world wide tour. I dont think it will be the last we hear of Eddie however, it wouldnt surprise me to see a solo project of some sort.

    i've said this here before:

i think that they don't even know.
if they go out on tour and things go well they'll feed off that and wanna do it again and make another record & tour, etc.

if they go out on tour and they struggle to get thru it, then they'll know to hang it up.

but i don't think they're planning this as a "last hurrah." that's just not the way they work.

the one thing i can't figure out is, Ed bitches about how hard it was to work with Dave in those later years but i'll tell ya they never seemed to really be having a bad time to me. maybe they're good actors, i dunno.

hopefully they can live to put aside their differences and just make good music together again.

Probably what will happen is if things go well with roth (which we dont have enough info to know for sure) they will probably go for another studio album. If things dont go well with roth, depending on when and where it breaks up, they will probably try to bring Sammy back.
I think Sammy wants to stay away for a while till after the 'Dave buzz' dies down. He doesn't want to compete with that.
Maybe Ed and Dave are great friends again, we dont know.

If it dies with dave and sammy says 'no thanks' they will probably look for a fourth singer. Having gotten the Dave bug out of everybodys system.
As long as Eddie is alive he will be making music for people to hear.
After Dave, its Sammy, then a fourth singer, maybe Coverdale, or Malloy.

It seems to me that if another VH w/Dave CD and tour do as well as we'd all like, and then they quit after that, they would at least go out on top, instead of withering away to nothing. This could spare them the 'has-been' status often assigned to rock bands with members over the age of 25 or so, deserved or not.

However, if it were to flop, this would be a big signal for them to wrap it up anyway.

Either way you look at it, it does make sense that this will be a one-shot-only deal, feast OR famine.

I'm not saying I WANT that to be the case, but it is certainly feasible.

With that possibility in mind, (even if the 1-shot theory is 100% wrong) I think we owe it to the band to give them the proper sendoff and make the CD the first to sell 1 billion copies, and the first concert tour to have all 6 billion people on Earth attend.

Well, at least we can TRY for this!

And if anyone downloads the CD from Napster and doesn't pay for it, I think that's an act of total disrespect for the band that's given us so much. (including headaches from wondering what the hell's going on!)

And is the thought of Eddie having an instrumental career all that bad?

As I said recently at my place and several times here...

    1) There's no future at all at this point for a Van "Halen" without David Lee Roth. A fourth singer would be suicidal and a Van Hagar reunion would not be sufficient, judging by the lack of airplay the Van Hagar songs get, in comparison to classic Van HALEN which is still on the radio every day.

    2) The future of the REAL Van HALEN depends on two things. a) can they record and tour without killing each other? Nobody expects Dave and Eddie to become best friends, but neither are Mick & Keith or Pete & Roger, and they are doing just fine.
    b) How long the physical health of the band members, especially Eddie & Alex, permits touring. Eddie might very well be able to play guitar in a wheelchair if he had to, but it would be a little harder for his brother.

Whether it lasts one album or five, it's much better that they go out on top as Van HALEN, than as the joke they became after the 1996 fiasco.

Van HALEN is: Dave, Eddie, Mikey, Alex. Any questions?

i gotta agree with FORD. anybody other than dave is not gonna work. i honestly can't say whether or not this is the end for vh after this album. i hope not, of course, but i'd rather see them go out with the world amazed than them go out with coverdale singing.

I'm in with FORD as well. As far as the band Van Halen, it lives and dies with whether or not Dave is tied to the project. It may have been a different scenario had the brothers grim not totally fucking blown the 96 scenario. I mean, that MTV thing really destroyed any leeway that they had. So it will just depend how long Dave and Ed can stand each other. Will it be one album, 2 albums, 10 albums? Hell, who knows...let's just take it one at a time.

I think Eddie, Mike and Dave will continue in some way until they can't move anymore. Eddie and Dave with solo projects, and Mikey as one of those dudes who jams with everyone. It will be curious to see where the next 20 years takes this band and its members...at least until Van Halen 2 erupts in about 10 years with Wolfie at the helm...

I would like to add that Van Halen will continue recording and touring as long as they are economically viable in creating profits. That assumes atleast all of that which FORD suggests plus additional conditions.

I think the VH machine will continue on for more than just one album and tour. Hide Your Sheep makes a good point though, if things go well they'll continue on with Dave if not who knows. My gut says more than one album and tour.

Ah, the pessimisim on this thread.

Am I the only one that thinks VH will only hang it up when they're physically unable to walk on stage and rock anymore?

Sheesh, everyone is in the, "Dave's only in for one album," mood... I'll say this much - the MINIMUM Dave will be in for is two albums, since VH is historically not one to jump to conclusions after one album. I say we get a 2001 album, a 2002 album, and probably at least one more. If three do sub-standard, WB will try to drop them. If three do phenominal, Dave may try to go it again.

Whatever happens, suffice to say, VH COULD go on if they have enough albums with DLR to build steam and then swapped over to Hagar. Recall they did well with Hagar last time, and I figure if VH is a respected commodity again people will give another Hagar album enough of a chance to see if it rocks or not before dismissing them.

Come on people, have some faith.
