    1. Bought Van Halen III on the day it was released.

    2. Defended VH3 to naysayers as provocative but uncommercial brilliance from Van Halen.

    3. Drove one whole day and stayed overnight to see VH3 concert.

    4. Bought a VH3 shirt AND a baseball cap.

    5. To this day I wear the shirt and the cap, even though occasionally people will take the time to comment that they didn't like Gary (man, if they talk to me imagine what members of VH must get!). Wore the cap to a club last night by the way!

    6. Watched and recorded and still watch occasionally VH's performance with Gary on MTV (Edward's playing is great!).

I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again - VH3 is one heck of an UNDERATED album and will one day earn the big time respect it's due.

Pat I think you are absolutely right about that.

Right now it is uncool to like VH3 but remember everything comes around.

VH3 will get its due eventually.

    Mr. Theodore Templeman:

Although I am sure that he would publicly deny this, I believe that the renegade hitch1969 would concur with privately with you on your assessment of Van Halen III.

Will there in fact, ever be a time that there is a "retro" demand for "classic Van Halen III"? As a Vulcan, I already appreciate the sonic aesthetics of this opus. Time has been demonstrated that humans, clouded by emotional aspects, are much more reluctant to accept realilty- along the timelines of 10-15 years.

Spock, i would not remind you of that which you know so well.
however, let me echo your sentiments by saying that emotional attachment to an established form of Van Halen is exactly what prevented the Terran public at large to accept a new direction of the group.
Even as a human, I have found that the Vulcan IDIC philosophy a crystal-clear interpereter of our universe (and perhaps others as well.)
IDIC has helped me keep an open mind.

Now, while i fully appreciate Vulcan use of logic, I must also fully embrace emotion as a human. Of all Vulcans, i know you fully understand what i mean. After all, you are half human.

I think my handle says it all. Go back and listen to some Extreme and you'll hear the talent, depth and range of Gary Cheron. III is an awesome album and I say the brilliance of it is still not understood by most. The emotion and musical wizardry is tops. If anyone is familiar with Gary, you know that this guy is a first rate front man. III may have been overproduced and not enough attention was put into making sure the vocals came across as they should have, but taken as a whole, it is great. Not typical VH, but again don't you think Eddie needed to experiment a little? His experience of twenty some years in the business and musicianship demanded it.

I am a high school teacher and during some study time I let the kids play some of
"their" music. They asked me to bring in some of "my" music. I brought in III from my car. To my surprise the kids all knew and loved Without You, Fire in the Hole, and One I Want. (Our local radio station played and supported III). They told me that the video for WY was "tight" and that VH kicks. I think that in itself shows that if MTV and radio stations would have gotten behind III in the first place, Cherone would still be in and we would have had a follow up and tour by now. (Not that I'm not excited about Roth being back in.)

    Oh well, just my input.

Let's review this drill one more time.

    Albums 1 - 6 = Classic VH
Albums 7 - Whatever with SH = Van Hagar
BOV1 = Compilation of two previously mentioned categories with two outstanding new songs from category #1
VHIII = Eddie Van Halen solo album (which I happen to like, but in no way confused with Van Halen, the group)

    Any questions?

Indeed, there will come a time when, hopefully, people will be able to let go of the emotional close-mindedness that keeps them from embracing anything but the first 6 albums and, well, they might just discover the other albums have quality on them as well.

Hell, it's all Van HALEN (with apologies for stealing FORD's spelling), no matter what certain people on this board say.

You still can't get your head around the idea that some of us listened to them with an open mind and just didn't think they were that good?

Quality is completely subjective in music (or art or most things for that matter), it's not an inherent property.
