I'm a huge fan of Buddy, and it says a lot about what kind of a musician Marcus was that he played for Buddy for many many years. If you couldn't hang, Buddy didn't keep you around lol.

I'm envious every time you mention getting to see Buddy and his band live in person.

Marcus was probably as close to a right hand man that Buddy ever had.

One of my all time favorite albums, Krupa and Rich from 1955.

Track 2, where they play together, dueling. I gotta say I absolutely love the sound of Krupa's snare here, with the rimshots. This track was great because Krupa was still in pretty good shape as a player. Some of their later televised duels it was hard at times, in part because of Buddy's relentless competitive nature, and also because drugs and alcohol really took an effect on Krupa as he aged.

My grandpa, my Mum's Pop, was a drummer and his all time favorite was Gene Krupa. There have been many more technically gifted players, including Buddy, but very very few who have matched Gene's showmanship and flair as a performer. Unfortunately, my grandpa died when I was 3-1/2 years old, I would've loved to have picked his brain about drumming and Krupa and any other players he may have liked from the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Buddy and Maynard Ferguson where the only big band era superstars I ever saw live. By the time I was 18-20 most of these guys where either dead or boozed out and brain dead skill wise. But not Buddy and Maynard. Thats why both went out in the early 70s and found the best young jazz players in their 20s early 30s and put those bands together. They did not want to be a touring geezer band. They paid those young dudes nothing much maybe scale. Many of his fellow aged musicians frowned upon that. They pretty much played the colleges and it worked! I'm just glad they did and I got to see it.
