Greatest fusion drummer ever, Billy was a mere 69 years old when this was filmed lol.

Billy at age 30, during his peak creative years recording for Atlantic in the mid 70s. IMO, nobody ever rolled down the toms better than him. This was the period where he changed the drumming world and was the first cat that came along and people thought he had unseated an aging Buddy Rich as the best in the world. He was definitely a force of nature behind the kit.

This tune specifically, and also the music of Mahavishnu Orchestra which featured Billy, Jan Hammer on keyboards, and John Mclaughlin on guitar, Al cited as the inspirations for Hot For Teacher when they were putting that together at 5150.

I really wish at some point in their later career, Ed and Al had done at least 1 or 2 instrumental albums exploring and pushing their progressive/jazz/fusion influences. They would have sold a lot less than they did with Sam albums, but it wouldve been fun to see them stretch their musicianship beyond AOR mainstream rock and pop singles/ballads, even for just one album.

I think they would have but they really turned into hermits. You need to tour for that .

Yeah, Al said Ed was a big fan of Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Al has cited Billy Cobham specifically in interviews over the years.

That's a good list but on any best\favorite drum list Rich is number one. I'd find a place for Joe Morello, John Bonham too. Your right about honorable mention it's endless. More good drummers than any other instrument it's the easiest imo to play.

I like the guy from Jane's Addiction, Steven Perkins, and the Smith guy from Journey. Great live drummers. At live shows, I find myself listening to the drummers more than any other individual performer.

If they were to put Jim Morrison and Bonzo in the same band, I think you would switch teams and become a Band Aid.

    Just saying.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Best high quality film of young Buddy Rich I've ever seen here . He's in Tommy Dorseys band 1943. Hes pretty laid back but he lets loose a time or two. Such talent. Pardon if I posted this way back on here. Idk
