Such moments are remembered for a long time. The beauty itself is in them - they are not so frequent and therefore are remembered as special cases.

Even if you listen to the old recordings of Buddy all the way back to his days with Artie Shaw no one comes close. He actually auditioned for Benny Goodman but Benny thought he would steal too much of the spotlight and he turned him down. Decades later on the Merv Griffith show the two reconciled and played a little trio tune together. It used to be on You Tube . Seeing Buddy live for me is right up there with seeing Ed in his prime. Steve Perry, Freddie Mercury,in his prime. Jocko Pastorious and Rick Wakeman in his prime. Being the best at what you do in the world is worth the price of admission.

Buddy's syncopation with his left hand was, and is, still light-years beyond anyone else's.

Bought myself a cute little Paiste 2002 5.5" Cup Chime effect cymbal. I eventually want to add a 7" and 8" cup chimes, but the little buggers are $99 each, so can't really make them a priority.

And people wonder why modern music doesn't have as much feel as prior eras.

Drum machines and snapping to a grid take all the life out of it. IMHO.

One day in the late 1970s my buddy Mike G calls and says I have 2 tickets to see the Buddy Rich band at University of Maryland tonight you want to go? I'm like I'll be right over. Mike is a trumpet player in a wedding band he's now a cpa in Philly. I had probably the most amazing night in my life with my clothes on minus a few VH and Journey gigs front row. Buddys kit is right at the front of the stage. His band is far behind so immediately you know who's boss. The next 90 min was like something from heaven. A sensational band of young players not the guys from the 30s-40s. These guys where all 20-30 yr olds and this 60 something drummer. Ive never seen such amazing playing. Buddy was really funny too as a drum frontman. He ends up wearing a bath robe at the end of the set. Fuck drum machines is what Buddy would say.
    10-6-2020 RIP King of sixstrings.

Buddy Rich was the Best. I only like John Bonham more, because he played with JPJ, JP, and RP.

Yeah, they were pretty good, weren’t they?

    Nice little heavy blues unit.

Again, the greatest left handed syncopation ever, and nobody could match his creativity on the snare, even to this day.

I know I've posted this one before but this is my all time favorite Buddy solo. Always laugh every time he hits the overhead mic at :38 in.

This solo is just off the charts. Of course, can be said by pretty much any solo Buddy ever did, but this one is really something special.
