Something has been happening to my taste in music lately and I feel the need to share it.
I've been posting here for over 2 and a half years now and I've considered myself a Van Halen fan for longer than that. I've always like the DLR version of VH better and never questioned this....
But recently, I stopped listening to Van Halen for a while...but this trend has since stopped....Now, I have found that the Sammy era songs sound better to me....I think I may be turnin into a Sammy fan....maybe I should stop posting at the Army....(?)
I just updated my profile to change my favorite song and album, and I started wondering if this shift happened to anyone else?Gozer the Traveller will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldronaii the Traveller came as a very large and moving Torb. Then of course in the third reconciliation of the last of the Meketrex supplicants they chose a new form for him, that of a Sloar. Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you.

Sounds like you are suffering from a common thing known as being human... at present there is no known cure... I would strongly suggest you marinate your brain for a minimum of 3 days in your favorite liquor... this will dull the pain...

It happened the other way for me.
I'm a relatively recent VH fan. My first CD was BOV1 and I loved everything on it, but thought that it would make sense to buy their most recent studio album next. So I got Balance and then all of the Sammy era CDs before the Dave ones.
Whilst I started out a fan of predominantly the Van Hagar stuff, when I got the Van Halen 1 and Fair Warning CDs I began to prefer the DLR era stuff.
Now I like them both about the same. I go through phases of listening exclusively to heaps of 78-84 stuff and then heaps of 86-95 stuff.
I consider the two eras to be two different bands, both equally good in their own way."The large print giveth and the small print taketh away" - Tom Waits

If you would go up to someone and say you were a Van Halen fan, and that person knew very little about Van Halen, they would still inevitably ask..."who do you like better, Hagar or Roth".
Short answer...thats just the way it is.Gozer the Traveller will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldronaii the Traveller came as a very large and moving Torb. your preference over VH's singer says alot about your personality and character -i will let someone else indulge as to what EXACTLY it says about your character... but it says alot about you

I disagree with the notion that you MUST have a favorite. Somethimes I want to watch an action movie and sometimes I'd rather have comedy. Sometimes I want Mint Choc. Chip and sometimes I want Vanilla. Just whatever strikes me at the times. I personally like all Van Halen (even about half of VH III).

Two things. First, I agree with ross. Sometimes I need a shot of Hagar, sometimes a shot of Roth. But, I do have a "favorite".
On the original topic, it MIGHT be a situation of "something new". I went the other way a bit. I have been a bigger fan of the Hagar era, but started to really get into the Roth era recently. Some of it was that I hadn't spent a ton of time listening to the back catalog. I have spent countless hours since 1996 cranking the Sammy era CD's, so I got a little sick of them in a way. The Roth era was almost new to me. I even got to the point this past year where I was really hoping for a Roth reunion.
Since I saw the Sam and Dave show, however, I've been more into Sam again. I dig the back catalog, but for whatever reason, some of the Sammy stuff just speaks to me personally. It's what I know, and what I love - damn, there's that fucking word that's in every Hagar songI don't dislike DLR, that era is my "second favorite band". But, I do admit some of Sam's stuff is total bullshit, so I'm not quite a redhead

Some people prefer Van Hagar over Van Halen, some people prefer Rush over Led Zeppelin. Some people prefer Cheap Trick over the Beatles, some men prefer men over women. It's a matter of taste.

The question who do you like better is common. As long as the answer isn't Gary, I think you will be ok. Although to the person who doesn't know much about VH, this would fuck em up, wouldn't it?
