Dave was and still is the ultimate song and dance man. Maybe some of you fellers are suffering from hearing loss due to constant high decibles emitting from your home hi-fi's, but Dave is roaring on stage these days. He's still successfully executing his style of vocalization live. Are you guys expecting Robert Plant or something? It was Dave's type of singing, combined with the music from the rest of the mighty Van Halen, that made us buy the records in the first place. And yes, he's still jumping around and spin kicking when most folks his age have trouble walking up a moderate flight of stairs.

I still find it hillarious when people say that Dave 'was never much of a singer'. I agree Dave is not a singer in the classic sense. He can't do what Plant did or what Sam does now. But, I saw him live for the first time in St. Louis with Sam and I thought he did great. Maybe it's because I had low expectations going in but nonetheless, I thought he did great. I often accuse rothbots of giving Dave too much credit but I think JMJ is selling him a bit short.

Someone wants me to make an MP3 of a Dave scream from 1982, and one from 2002. His voice is shot, it's gone. That's not a rip on Dave but it's the truth. 20 years of smoking and coke will fuck you up good. Just the same, if Eddie had arthritis in his left hand, you'd probably be able to hear that effect his playing.

Doesn't consuming mass quantities of Whiskey goof up your vocal chords too?

Isn't that was also happened to Pacino?

Compare his voice in the Godfather to his voice even 10 years later in Scarface. It's like night and day. Let alone how it sounds now.....

Dave doesn't strike me as anything other than a casual pot smoker, but I could be wrong....I don't own his autobiography.

I don't believe he smokes cigarettes, but again, I could be wrong there too.

I know after a hard night of drinking my voice is goofed up for the next day, even if I'm not out at a bar (where you have to shout to be heard).

I can only imagine what 20+ years of Whiskey on back-to-back nights, plus singing/shouting would do to one's voice.

For as eccentric and "demanding" as Dave is, it's kinda interesting that you never hear him make Whitney Houston-esque demands with regards to his throat, like, "it must be 72 degrees in here, with appropriate humidity for my voice, plus, I need a glass of honey and mineral water for my throat before every show.

I don't know what Dave's pre-concert routine is, but I suspect it's probably something quirky, like reading a chapter of 'War and Peace', doing some stretching, drinking a 6 oz. can of V-8, and then taking a swig of Whiskey before going on stage.

I'd be curious if anybody has any details.

Dave has his own unique approach, thats why he is "Diamond Dave" !!

Roth is still a great Rock N Roll entertainer, whether you like his vocal style or not, he always puts on a great show.

    VHWalkathon - Project 316

EVH: The music is first and foremost. That's the way it's always been and that's the way it will always be. Because without the music, what is there? Nothing. There's nothing without the music. You can't even cop an attitude without the music (laughs).
