King David and Sir Samuel...Someone's Missing Here - And It's Not Ed!

While the magnanimous teaming of King David Lee Roth with Sir Samuel Hagar for a summer tour is the framework for which show biz legend is born, one cannot help but feel a slight biting stab of sadness and melancholy in the wake of this most unlikely pairing. And who really ever expected this pairing? Most of us thought we'd see Dave dancing majestic balletic pirouettes around the Bros. Halen long before he ever shared a mouldy SM58 with Hagar the Honorable. Sure, we'll all be there, fists and lighters and cheers and all, praying in kneeled reverence and gratitude for the divine magic so righteously on display before us. But what we really are worshipping is the divine magic of days past. And who was the conduit, the one who created the bedwork, the framework that catapulted these two talented performers into the realm of legendary superstars standing alongside the likes of Jagger, Presley, and Morrison in the hallowed halls of rock and rolls most gifted greats?

I'll tell you who. Valerie Bertinelli.

Yup. Val Bertinelli. The beautiful, talented, rock solid mother and wife who provided the nurture and stability that allowed her husband the freedom and comfort to craft, hone and sculpt the 'brown' sound that still strokes and caresses willing eardrums to splurting fits of sonic ecstasy around the world. We all know that there is one pivotal individual behind the man on the stage that truly makes it happen. To Mrs. Edward VH I say 'thank you' and I raise my glass in toast. From all of us who really believe let me be the first in the rising chorus of many to say 'we salute you'. It is truly frightening to consider, to imagine what might have been, or might not have been, had the Divine Miss B. never entered the picture...

Don't get me wrong, I like Val, but in all honesty, I think we may have got another one or two albums out of the original Van Halen if it wasn't for her. Can you imagine how hard it would be to try to be a faithful married man if you had to hang out with David Lee Roth in his prime? I'm sure that caused a lot of friction in the band.

Van HALEN were well establsished as America's greatest rock n roll band before Eddie met Valerie. Therefore, to credit their success to her is ridiculous.
