I agree that it's a great song. I get chills when I hear the intro.
The VHE says that Dave wrote the lyrics about a woman in a Calvin Klein underwear advertisement.

This is one of those "trance songs" for me. Whenever I hear it, I zone out until it's over.
The song is so radically different from the rest of 1984. (I know Jump was keyboard driven, but "I'll Wait" is different.) It's not really able to be categorized. It's not a "pop song," or "a rocker..."
It's a trance song.
The opening notes just suck you in. And when Al kicks in, man, that riff is livin on the phat-pharm.
Dave's lyrics and voice are slick, but also seedy and tinged with an underlying threatening tone. When he sings, "I wrote a letter and told her these words, that meant a lot to me... I never sent it, she wouldn't have learned, her eyes still follow me... And while she watches I can never be free, SUCH good photography..." I figured out why this song is so cool...
I could relate.
If you think about the lyrics, they tell a sad and lonely story. Our boy is hooked on a femalian that is not giving him the time o' day. (I've always wondered whether or not the guy in the song actually KNOWS the girl in the photos... either way, though, it's a fantastic storyline, IMO.)
Bad times in my life always call upon the playing of "I'll Wait" because I know that the dude in the song has got it worse than me. LOL.
Eddie's solo is string-pimpin at it's finest. Listen closely to the last notes of his solo - he's choking the life out of those notes with his whammy bar.
After Jump, it's my favorite song off of 1984.
I've never understood why almost no one else could dig it.
But, to each his own...

i love this song! i always thought this song was about masturbation. they should play this one live again sooner or later. plus the solo is awesome too! i actually heard this song on black radio once. i was surprised. but maybe it was due to eddies connection to beat it. perhaps it could have been the track was mainly synthesized. also during this time period you could hear some of the more funkier new wave tunes on black radio which was very cool! 3

I like I'll Wait. I think it's one of their most underrated songs.

i love that song. i can't really understand how so many people don't like it. the lyrics are really cool. actually, lyric wise, i think they are the most creative. and, van-halen.com also says that it was written about a calvin klein underwear model. when i first heard the lyrics, and then learned about how they were written, i thought it was that much cooler.
