I think it was a fore gone conclusion that DLR was going to return to Van Halen about 12 hours after November 5. Like everyone else - I knew that this was a good thing - considering how many shows he had done recently - his voice was in tip top shape!! One of the common complaints about MWM and CGTS was his voice was rough. THe reason this was - was because he hadn't been in front of the mic in a while. What will happen now?!? We are approahing a year from Dave's last performance (I think it was January).

I am just scared that the album will come out - and people will bash it because Dave's voice isn't tuned to perfection....

What do singers do to keep their voice in shape when not touring / recording??

There's not much of a reason to be concerned about Dave's voice, IMHO.

I really doubt he's letting it get out of shape while we wait for the album to come out. He's most likely keeping it in shape.

I really think there could be legal problems holding the guys back, so while they're doing whatever they're doing, they're most likely ALL staying in shape (or getting IN shape ) for the upcoming tour.

I'm not worried about Dave's voice in the least.

    (As if you cared. LOL.)

Dave talks in his book about how in 1996 Eddie didn't want to do any jamming, which Dave wanted to do for the sake of strengthening his voice. I would have to think that it would be different this time. If Van Halen makes the commitment to put out a record (and go on tour), absolutely everything is riding of how great it is, including the strength of Dave's voice. Certainly Eddie would be aware of this and be prepared to do as much as possible to make sure that Dave's voice is in tip top shape. Eddie would have nothing to gain by having Dave sound bad on the new record.

Dave's voice is of no concern to me, none. It's a non-issue IMO.

My only Dave concern is whether he is in Van Halen or not.

Brett:How can you say Dave's vocal ability on stage is of no concern? Perhaps the Live in Finland CD was just a bad night, but what if he has 2 bad concerts to one good one. I don't really know how his overall tour was and it's hard to gauge from the DLR lovers. They think his farts carry a great tune and smell good too. Your telling me if you went to a VH concert and Roth sang the same way he did on the Live in Finland, that just the fact that Roth is up there would be good enough for you?

Why am I jumping the gun, I'm saying that I would no doubt go to the concert as I did when they toured with Cherone, but I would not be happy if Roth's voice was totally shot and sings the way he did on the Live in Finland CD. Except for Paul Rogers, you basically don't expect any singer to be able to sing like they did 25 years ago, I can accept that but there is a cut off point to weather a guy should or should not be on stage. Is Roth's voice going to hold out for what may be a 2 year tour? That is a big question mark.

Vince, man, I think we should all wait and see how Roth sounds on CD first before we wig out over this. Hell, he may sound like crap on stage or he may not. We don't know yet, and I'm hoping that the band will be intelligent enough to play songs in his range.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the Finland CD you keep using as a reference... that was early in the tour for him, right? One of the Dave-ites want to confirm or deny this for me?

Damn, I gotta get this Finland CD and hear this for myself. If you believe the stories, it sounds like Dave was skinning cats in his vocal chords.

According to the list at the Army, it was the sixth show of the tour.

Just thought I would add that I saw Dave live last year (12/99) and I thought his voice sounded better than it did when I saw him on the ALAE tour....

His voice is fine....and yes, in 1996 Dave wanted Ed to jam a lil' with him which appparently did not happen. Dave will sound better than in 96...

    IMO !!!

If you listen to some of the later concerts on the tour like the October '99 recordings on mp3, Dave sounds very strong. He may not be able to hit the high notes like before, but he's singing the correct way, because he improvises all over the place and he sounds great. I like the bluesy style he adds to older songs now. He's a much better singer on stage than he was with Van Halen. Dave's voice is different, but it's definately gotten better since the Finland fiasco (some of it was awful.) I heard Dave wasn't practicing much before the tour (the tour is his practice.) He's gonna sound a lot better than YFLM and DLR Band albums...Trust me.

Glenn-To Roth's credit it's not a real good recording, however he is constantly out of key throughout the concert. The Roth Army doesn't like to refer to that Bootleg because it's so bad. I have a copy. I also saw him in DC on the Bad Company tour, he was better in DC than what he did in the Finland concert, but can his voice sustain a 2 year tour. Let's see! I think part of the answer to this is Roth going to go on tour with the same Groupy/party mentality. From everything I've herd about older singers is that the most important thing they can do is get sleep.
I've herd Greg Allman and Rod Stewart say that.
