There's been a lot of press recently touting the return of rock and the death of the teen scene. However such rags like Rolling Stone, who used to matter years ago, only dictates what is popular. Britney Spears has appeared on more covers than VH. Yes, it's true. I for one am still waiting for the return of real rock. Bands like the Vines, Hives, Strokes, White Stripes should be commended for trying, but I doubt if any of them will be around 5 or 10 years from now. VH can still make a statement. Not only can they bring back rock, but bring back rock stars. Yes VH were, are and always will be rock stars-with Dave anyway. Guns N Roses could have helped the cause by reuniting or at least showing up for gigs with the new lineup. But no, they fucked it all up. We're sick of KISS. The Stones are the Stones, but let's face it, they should retire. VH can still come back big. They're not too old just yet and they can bring back all four original members. Aerosmith may still be around but any real Aerosmith fan will tell you that they haven't had a good album since Done With Mirrors. VH, it's up to you. As elder statesmen, you can save rock. It is your duty. It is your mission. Time is running out.

Save rock from what? Rock has changed as it always has done through the years since it began. Bands come, have their time, then they go. Rock, and any music, is always changed and refinded by the young who come along. Rock has always been about the young and rebellious. If VH comes back it will just be nostalgia for all us old farts no matter the singer. They are no longer relevent, had their day, had their 15mins. However myself, I'd still love to see VH back because it is music I can relate to and understand. The new music I don't, and that is only because I am quite simply old.

I don't even think the power of a reformed Van Halen could save the sad state of affairs with today's music scene although it would be nice trying.

I think people are mixing two different things here, "rock and roll music" and "the music business". Van Halen, with Dave or Sammy could do wonders for Rock and Roll music, but I doubt it would have much more than a slight effect on the music business as a whole. The way I see it, VH could care less about the "business" side of it, especially if all this "Ray Daniels and lawyers" stuff proves to be true. Who cares if VH saves or changes "the music business", cause it's a lost cause already. But if you get enough groups on the same page, they could definitely influence the younger musicians of today, and cause a tide of change in rock and roll music, a change that is very needed in my eyes.
John 3:16, Can You Dig It?
People, the 6 wings of the Mighty Van Halen will fly again! Can You Dig It?
You gotta give more than you take! Can You Dig it?
And underneath the arch, it turned into a march,
and there He found a spark to set this fucker off!
Set it off, set it off now children, set if off!
We are down the road! I Can Dig It! Can You?

I agree Warhead. An old act like VH (and I say that with deep regret) can't give music the much needed kick in the ass. What rock needs is someone to storm the scene like GNR did in the eighties. Remember... hair spray, spandex, Warrant, Poison, Tryxter (I know, they sssuuuuucckkkeddd!!!!!!) ruled the scene. All of us guitarists and rockers thought rock was becoming a no-talent freak show. Then comes the ultimate freaks! And damn, they can play! In fact, they rock! The attitude is back, followed by an undeniable kick-ass guitar section! In the eighties, GNR saved the music I hold dear (Much like VH did in the late 70s, by the way). But we all need another new savior. I just hope we're not too old to recognize them when/if they come. Maybe Filter can open for Van Halen next time they're down under.

Yeah, Suburban Highway could let Van Halen open with a couple of numbers.

Save rock from what? Death? Um, no, rock is far away from death. Maybe not in the form people want to see it in, but it's alive and well."Just once I'd like to do the right thing and not get punished for it."

I guess so. Those bands are good and do rock SNM, but none of them has turned rock and roll upside-down like VH did when they entered the scene. Plus, I'm still kinda hung up on guitar solos.

Hey, I like Godsmack and Disturbed, and even a little bit of Creed, but like JA said, I took like a little guitar solo. That said, my own personal abilities are more suited to play this newere type of music with few solos, and when they do have them, you can figure them out pretty quickly, and play them close if you have the proper effects pedals. My barometer on the whole deal is when I was a kid, everyone, even people's parents knew who VH was, hell, some kids' folks even listened to them too. Today, I'll talk music with young kids at a club or concert, and they act like they've never heard of Godsmack or Disturbed. SO maybe, my beef is really that there aren't as many rock and roll music fans as there used to be. And that would call for a tip of the hat to all this boy-band and skanky hide music out there today. Those groups that SNM listed are popular now in their own right, but will their music be played on the radio in some type of format in another 10 years. I kind of wonder?

Never know, Warhead. Times change, out with the old, in with the new flavor. Those who don't change get left behind.
But, at the same time, everything trendy is cyclical. Guitar solos will be back sometime."Just once I'd like to do the right thing and not get punished for it."

It's just Sammy improvising. It's not from an existing song/cover piece. Might actually have been a lyric chunk Sam had ready to go. Sounds like he was not expecting the riff that Ed launched into...
