The year was 1984. Big Brother may have been watching us but we had our eyes on one thing and one thing alone - the august Van Halen juggernaut mowing a path of good times and elation across this rock we call planet Earth.

Van Halen was bigger than The Stones. Roth had eclipsed Jagger as rocks foremost frontman. And Edward Van Halen had taken rock guitar to a place unknown, a place that could only be described as divine.

It was impossible for any sixteen year old out cruising the strip to avoid hearing the pounding strains of "Panama" bursting from cherry red convertibles captained by young Eddie's, Dave's, and Valerie's with flowing locks of pubescent hair. It didn't matter if that strip was in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan or Hollywood, California, we were united the globe over by our common bond - the joy we felt when experiencing the rapture known as Van Halen.

And then 1985 and the good times and elation morphed into something else. Something different. Sex became love and guitar histrionics became songs.

But still the ever vigilant faithful wait.

For as long as there is a mere chance that those triumpant days of 1984 may return there is hope and light in an otherwise dark and barren world.
