Albums I Just Don't Get
Every now and then, Guitar magazine or Rolling Stone or somebody else will publish a list called "The 100 Greatest Albums of the Last 100 Years" or something like that.
I always read the list and try to make an effort to listen to or buy a few of the records. There are usually about twenty or so that seem to show up on every list (Sgt. Pepper's, Dark Side of The Moon, Led Zeppelin 4, etc.), and I assume that they all must be pretty good even if I've never heard them since everybody puts them on their list.
I'm looking at my wall of CD's right now, and I can spot three albums that I actually went and bought because they were on everybody's list, but I just don't like at all:
1. Miles Davis Bitches Brew
2. Rolling Stones Exile on Main Street
3. Grateful Dead Workingman's Dead
I'm not saying that I they suck or anybody who likes them it stupid or anything like that. I'm just saying that I bought these albums on purpose, and I put them on, and I try real hard to like them because everybody says they're great, but I just don't get it.
Does anybody else have albums like that?

Anything....and I mean ANYTHING by the Eagles. I just can't stand 'em.
Likewise with Rush. I have really tried to like them, but I just can't stand Geddy Lee's voice for one reason or another.Last edited by rs812; 06.22.07 at 09:31 PM.

You hit the nail on the head with "Exile on Main Street". I've listened to it at least 20 times and it gets worse everytime.

I'm there with you on Rush. I can really appreciate the musicianship and when I had the chance to see them during I believe the Signals tour in '84 with Gary Moore supporting, I was really jazzed. However, after really enjoying Moore's set, I think I made it through about 4 songs with Rush before leaving my seat (10th row) and wandering up to the lawn and soon leaving because I was so bored. I gave Rush another try during the Vapor Trails tour and really enjoyed the show but I'm still not a huge fan.
I couldn't stand Bruce Springsteen until a buddy talked me into going to one of his shows in LA in 1981. Having 2nd row center tix helped a lot, but it turned out to be a mind-blowing concert even though I didn't know half the songs and I've been a big fan ever since. Kind of the same thing with Arcade Fire whom I just saw last month, couldn't get into the albums despite tons of recommendations but once I was blown away by the live show, I'm hooked.
Tool is another band I have a hard time getting into that I'd really like to like. The Beatles have never really interested me either.
T.B.

I never "got" Nirvana, STP, or Pearl Jam, although there are a handful of PJ songs I like. Just didn't see why those bands exploded the way they did.
Anything involving Dave Navarro or Perry Farrell. It's just not happening, I tried.
I've learned over the years that music is subjective, and no one actually sucks based on what kind of music they dig.
Oh, and Godsmack sucks out loud, lol.....

Radiohead. Don't get what's so damn impressive about 'em.
Their first single "Creep" was a blatant Nirvana ripoff. Everything I've heard after that is just weird, like they're trying to mix Syd-era Pink Floyd with Split Enz or something??
Anyone care to explain why these guys are supposed to be so great?Eat Us And Smile

Ditto on Rage.
Coupa tracks here or there, but overall:
Snoresville.
I knew music was going to suck forever when every ad
for every band in the 90s mentioned them as an influence.

Radiohead I can't stand at all.
And I don't get how people think Jeff Beck's "Blow by Blow" is so great. I don't argue his status in guitar history (although I haven't listened to much), but I got this CD about five years ago and it doesn't do anything for me. I was expecting to be blown away like a Satriani, Vai, or Petrucci but it sounds more like Sesame Street music to me. The keys stick out more to me than any guitar that grabs me. I'd rather listen to the likes of Montrose, Iommi, Lifeson, or Frehley from that time period.VAN HALEN

KISS-Rock and Roll Over. The 70's were long over before I ever discovered KISS, and the first two albums I heard were Love Gun and Dressed to Kill. Everybody raves about RARO but to me it's nothing special.
The Doors. Just in general I love the popular stuff but when I try to listen to their studio albums I'm just bored to tears.
Same thing happened with STP. They were dead before I ever gave them a chance. Their Thank You collection is amazing, but I've tried to listen to a couple of their studio albums and they just fell flat.
The Black Crowes-Three Snakes and One Charm. A couple of good songs but a huge dropoff from the previous albums.

Um. Ditto.
I can understand the Rush discrepancies. You either love Rush or hate Rush, there's really no in-between.
But Exile is classic boogie Stones blues, and Miles Davis really is the only motherfucker who adequately pulled off rock-jazz fusion, and that was Bitches' Brew incarnate.
Also, not grooving on the Beatles is kinda like not grooving on water and food, but okey dokey.
But as far as my own list....
Black Sabbath with Dio. I mean, Mob Rules isn't a lemon, don't get me wrong. But Iommi just ain't Sabbafantastic without Ozzy. Further along that train of thought, I'm somewhat of the opinion that Ozzy albums ain't quite Ozzy albums without Randy. I guess that's just me, maybe.
Def Leppard - High and Dry. Most DL fans hype this as their quintessential FAN album (Pyromania being AMERICA's album). Me, I think it's overrated, but I'm not a hardcore DL fan either.
Pfft. Nirvana's Nevermind is the biggest hoax in music history. Wait, maybe the second biggest, after KISS.
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon. Yeah, I said it. Admittedly, I'm not the biggest Floyd fan, and sure, I know its record and how long it was on Billboard's rankings. But I'm not sure the music weighed this album as much as the era it was birthed in, and moreover, as far as Floyd goes, it's The Wall or bust for me, and even then...man, I gotta be in a dark mood for Roger and co. Oh, and there's no Floyd minus Roger, for that matter, but I'll give Gilmour credit for the efforts.
All these newer flashes in the pan....Audioslave, Nickelback, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Matchbox 20, No Doubt...forget it. Whatever. Though I'm trying real hard to accept and acclimate some Buckcherry.
Oh, and Skid Row? SO overrated it's pathetic.
IMHO, as always.
