David Gilmour admires Eddie
Okay. Here is an excellent interview of David Gilmour. It's from 1995.
http://www.pinkfloydonline.com/int84.htm
Quote:
Have any of the younger, more speed-oriented players ever interested him?
Gilmour scrunches up his face, frowns, and looks up at the ceiling as if he has lost some-thing.
"Ah yes...and where are they now?" he asks, before laughing loudly. "There aren't many of the speed merchants that I have any great curiosity about. Eddie Van Halen is great, a brilliant guitar player. Some of his solos on his own stuff and on the Michael Jackson piece are short, concise, brilliantly crafted solos. They're not just about speed. He can do a bit of something that's quite gentle and then throw in something that just blows you away because of the sheer pace of it for a second. And then he goes back to something else. There are moments when I would like to be able to do that, but, as I said, you get what you're given."Suomi Finland Perkele!!

Achievements:
Yeah, I remember that. He thinks Ed's great and wishes at times he could play like Ed...(like everyone else)
Gilmour is great too though. Totally unique .. has his own very recognizable style. One of my faves, and definitely one of the best.....

I agree. Gilmore has an incredible sense of timing and melody.

Gilmour doesn't need to worry about much when he plays guitar. Nice to hear his thoughts on Eddie though.
I'd like to hear Eddie's thoughts on him...

One could only hope that when Ed turns 60, he records an album as good as Gilmour's 'On an Island."

The brilliance of Gilmour's solos are on par with Eddie, for me. Idea, execution, tone... a sure thing every time.
I love teaching and working on Gilmour solos with students.

The thing I admire about David Gilmour is that his band was offered $250 million--two hundred and fifty million dollars (!!!) to do a world tour, and he turned it down because it was too much of a hassle.
I want to be just like him when I grow up.
"$250 million? Let's see, that's $62,500,000.00 for me...Nah. No thanks."

Actually I think you'd be surprised about how much of the $250M gilmour would get. In an interesting parallel with VH, the $$$ are not split evenly in Pink Floyd and it is pretty much Dave Gilmours band now. In an interview I read with him (I think I found it on www.guitars101.com) he explains that part of the reason for splitting with Roger Waters was splitting $$$ and that when they reformed for Momentary Lapse of Reason and Delicate Sound of Thunder tour, the other guys in the band's confidence was totally shot and that he had to basically hold their hand throught hte whole experience. Can't remember if it actually said so, but gae the distinct impression that Mason & Wright have been hired guns ever since. That is also the reason for the number of musicians on that and subsequent tours.
