You wouldn't want to get me started. I'll be out of a job in two weeks as will my co workers because they are moving our jobs. I am at least getting a severance which will allow time to job hunt and spend some summer time with my kids but the events which lead up to this boggle the mind. We perform a major function for the entire company and they had absolutely no plan for the transition. Does that tell you anything about their brillance? We are done in two weeks and they haven't advise our suppliers or the rest of the company of what will happen. We are just hoping they don't extend the shutdown date.

Work is ok for me right now. I would rather have my old job back but it was my choice to take this new one on. I just got out of the military and took a job as a security guard at an Airforce Aerostat site, it's a Lockheed Martin contract. The people there were impressed by me somehow and asked if I would take a laborer position for a little more money (union job). I only took the job (guard) because it gave me a lot of time to do my college homework, but the laborer position didn't really effect that so I took it. A few months later their Quality Control position opened up and I applied for that (it's what I did in the Marine Corps). I was shocked to find out they actually wanted to hire me!
So I took it and that's what I do now, basically what I had done for the last 14 years (minus the System Administrator duties, thank God!) only now I don't have to wear combat boots and cammies. I make more money then ever, with my retirement check, Tricare Prime, and my regular work check I can't complain. But the job is killing me, I was so much happier doing mechanical stuff, it was the first time in my life with stuff like that and I loved every second of it. Now I'm back in an office worrying about report deadlines and safety stuff, it's not fun anymore. But, it pays the bills and I still have some time (not like I used to) to do my homework.
In less then 12 months I was able to triple my starting pay, but I'm leaving for Idaho sometime next year so I will have to do that all over again (but this time with a degree). It will be nice to get out of Yuma, it's been over 10 years. St. Louis would be nice (my home town) but my wife won't have any of that (new baby and bad neighborhoods).

When I first went back to Amazon.com, I enjoyed my job. That has started to fade though, as I have been stuck doing the same thing day after day for the past 10 months. Every now and then I get a break, and they'll put me somewhere else in the dept. but for the most part, I do the same thing over and over again. I guess that's the price I've paid for becoming very good at what I do. The job that I do has a quota and it's 300 units per hour. On most days, I can run about 450-500 units per hour, and on two occasions I have topped 550. I am the best at that job in our facility. It doesn't get me any more money however, and there are people that are getting paid more than I am that don't hit 300 UPH on a consistent basis. The only plus side is the Area Manager that I have now at least recognizes that I am an asset to the dept. and actually has my back, unlike the spineless bastard that basically left me hanging back in Dec. of '05.
I am going to talk to my new AM this week and talk to him about getting some training in for some of the other jobs in our dept. that rely less on physical work and a little more mental. My hands hurt and most mornings it's difficult to turn the door knob to open up the bedroom door. I can't keep up the rate that I work at forever.
Maybe someday, I will become a lead out there and get to use my gray matter a little more, but until then I'll just bust my ass because that's the only way I know how to work."Viking - last to sleep, first to rise, last to leave, that's how the Nords of old rocked the house." ~ timmac in the 'Texas Linkers' thread talking about yours truly. :-)

Tell me about it.
Work has had me down for the last few months, and I mean seriously down. Really struggling at the moment due to the various changes in Medicare. President Bush really changed the whole game, and it almost cost me my job. It did cut my income, and I don't even get overtime anymore. Barely hanging on at this point, but I'm fighting.
Looking forward to starting Real Estate school next month so I can get licensed. The Real Estate industry is booming in Philadelphia, and I wanna make some serious money. I've grown tired of making people rich off of my blood, sweat and tears.
Hopefully I'll be able to get licensed soon so I can get the hell out of this place. Until then, just gotta keep striving."It's always a Catch-22 situation. They hate you if you're the same, and they hate you if you're different."

Isn't that the truth. In my case, I'm certain that Jeff Bezos isn't worried about how he's going to pay next months rent.
I did get a $2.10 raise a couple of weeks ago, but then again, everybody got a raise due to cost of living increases, etc. It wasn't because I've been busting my ass."Viking - last to sleep, first to rise, last to leave, that's how the Nords of old rocked the house." ~ timmac in the 'Texas Linkers' thread talking about yours truly. :-)

Great thread-here's my bitch for the day. I work surveillance at a casino. I've been doing it for 10 years now and I am pretty damn good at it. Its not what I want to do, but its a job, pays the bills. Anyway, the other night I was sick as a dog. I had a fever and was wearing two jackets, yet I was freezing. It was busy as hell, so I sucked it up. Finally, I asked the supervisor if I could leave early. He asked me to stay until some shit was done-cool, no problem. About 5 minutes before I was to leave, I caught some major shit, live. Needless to say, I couldn't go, which I didn't mind under the circumstances. This is one of the biggest things I've ever caught during my time there. 3 weeks have passed and I have yet to hear a peep from my boss/manager telling me good job or anything like that. I've told them that's all I want from them-I don't want time off or anything like that, just tell me you appreciate my work and I'm doing a good job. They talk about giving me a day off or something like that when it becomes "official", whatever that means. Granted, I work graves, but how hard is it to pick up the phone and give me a call? Or hang around one day after work and talk to me? Bad part, despite this and all my other good stuff, I could walk in tomorrow and get fired on the spot-the whole fire-at-will crap. Gotta love how hard work pays off for you.

They never tell you that you're doing a good job, but they're very quick to tell you about a mistake you made
I bust my ass and do a very good job. Others in my dept. work slow, do a half-ass job when they actually do some work!
I have a new boss now who says he's aware of what's going on. Well we'll see; the end of this month is review/raise time. My new boss is cool and I've known him 10 years now. He's a good guy and we have a good work-relationship, but if I don't get what I should be getting for a raise he's going to hear about it! I'm not a rat and I don't name names or point fingers, but this is getting ridiculous.

I hope one day I can find my place in this world so I can honestly say those four words.
Until then, I gotta keep pounding.
And to those of you who are discouraged by the people around you, their lack of concern which never seems to stop their progress......work hard and work proud, because there is One who sees your work ethic, and knows your heart. You'll probably never find fulfillment from your employers or your co-workers, but you can still go home feeling good about yourself everyday, and that does mean something.

I love my job, and they treat me like gold generally. Some of my co-workers can be assholes at times. The guy that runs our warehouse needs to learn how to manage people and time. He gets stressed and blames things on everyone without having a story to substantiate what he says. I absolutely lose it when he gets on his fucking high horse and starts literally pointing his finger in my face, I swear I'll break it someday if it happens again. He just doesn't understand how to treat others with respect.
Other than a few doorknobs like that, I like my job although I get fed up with certain customers sometimes. People need relax sometimes.

Amen to that. They are quick to point out your short comings but not your successes. At mine, we have/had fuckups come and go. There was this one. She spent more time on her phone than anything else. They jumped my shit b/c I didn't stop her. Oh, my bad, must have missed that memo saying I got promoted. They then jumped my shit b/c I didn't do a report on something we normally don't do reports on and when no one asked for a report on it. Geez...

Lucky me, I just found out that it was requested that I train the person flying in next week who will be replacing us as well as the supervisor since he has no clue what we do or how we do it. Happy, happy, joy, joy. I have never been in this position before and it seems very strange.
