Couple finishes restaurant meal while child tied in hot car
    POSTED: 8:02 a.m. EDT, June 13, 2007
    Story Highlights
    • 6-year-old boy found tied in hot car outside Cracker Barrel in Ringold, Georgia
    • Couple charged with cruelty to children and concealing a weapon
    • The boy has been placed in protective custody

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee (AP) -- Police in northwest Georgia have rescued a boy from a hot car where his mother's companion is accused of tying him up.

Ringgold, Georgia, police say a Cracker Barrel restaurant employee called police after seeing Raymond Minchew take the 6-year-old out of the restaurant and return without him -- then finished eating his meal. Ringgold is about 13 miles southeast of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Police found the bound boy sitting in the car, crying.

Sergeant John Gass says the child was soaked with sweat and had a rope tied to one of his ankles. Gass says the temperature was in the 80s Saturday in Ringgold.

The 61-year-old Minchew and the boy's mother -- 35-year-old Rachel Gilchrist -- were arrested and charged with cruelty to children and concealing a weapon. There was a handgun in the car.

Investigators believe the boy was in the hot car for about a half hour.

Police Sergeant John Gass says the couple contended the boy had misbehaved, although witnesses at the restaurant disagreed.

The boy has been placed in protective custody.

And if the kid wasn't tied up in the car, and happened to escape and runaway, the parents would be at fault for that too. It's a no win situation for them! What were they supposed to do?

..fuckin' scumbags! What can possibly be going through a person's mind when they're doing stupid, crazy shit like this? I'd be willing to kill them over this. They're obviously not right in the head. Let's get rid of them!

Just found this on the local news web from that area.

RINGGOLD, Ga. -- Investigators discovered a crying 6-year-old boy tied up in a sweltering car at a suburban restaurant after employees saw a man take the child outside and then return without him to finish eating.

Got A News Tip? E-mail Us At newstip@wsbtv.com

An employee at the Cracker Barrel restaurant called Ringgold, Ga., police after staff witnessed the incident Saturday, Sgt. John Gass said Tuesday.

Gass said investigators believe the child, whose name was not released, was likely tied up for about 30 minutes while outside temperatures were in the 80s in Ringgold, about 13 miles southeast of Chattanooga.

"He was sitting up in between the two front seats and he was crying," Gass said. "He had a rope tied to one of his ankles. The child was just sweating, just soaking."

Gass said he and a county investigator "untied him and took him inside where it was cool."

The boy's mother, Rachel Gilchrist, 35, and her companion, Raymond Minchew, 61, both of Sandy Springs, were arrested Saturday and charged with cruelty to children and concealing a weapon. Police found a handgun in the car.

Gilchrist remained in custody Tuesday at the Catoosa County, Ga., jail. Records show Minchew was released late Monday on a $5,000 bond.

The mother and her companion contend the boy misbehaved, although witnesses disagreed, Gass said.

"It doesn't matter what the child did. No child needs to be taken out and put in a vehicle, left alone and put in the heat," Gass said.

He said the boy was placed in state protective custody.

An employee at the restaurant said Tuesday that company policy would not allow staff members to comment.

"I am glad somebody called," Gass said. "We don't know what else might be going on. I'm just glad the little man is not with them anymore."

Gass said the boy's mother and her companion were in northwest Georgia for sightseeing.

County court officials declined to provide any schedule of hearings for the mother and her friend.

The only good thing to come out of this will be he is no longer with them.

I swear, some people just don't deserve to have children. That poor little guy. I've got a soon to be six year old and I could never imagine him going thru something like that!! I'd tie myself up first before ever letting anything hurt him.

At least the little guy is safer now but I hope he has relatives willing to step up and take care of him. His "mother" doesn't deserve to have him.

I hope they get the book! Idiots.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...you need a licence to drive a car, you need a licence to fish but any fucking moron can have kids!!! There has to be some test we can administer before deciding whether to give government subsidized histerectomys (sp?) and vasectomys.

You know that's not a bad idea. ^

It'd sure as hell save more children from having to endure incompetent parents.

And unfortunately that kind of parenting dysfunction is usually passed onto the children; the kids grow up not knowing any other way.

So does it take a family or a community to raise a child under those kinds of circumstances?

Consider the judgement taking place in regard that a 35 year old woman is involved with a 61 year old man. Wanna bet neither would be considered worthy of the destinction "prize-winning", to start with?

When I was in 5th grade there was a kid in my class who refused to sit still. He kept getting up and walking around the room. One day, our teacher grabbed a jump rope and tied him to his chair.

It was scary at the time, but now... it's pretty damn funny.

Of course, that teacher would be in big trouble if she were to do it today!

That same thing happened to a girl when I was in the 2nd grade. The substitue teacher did it. The girl kept saying, "I'm gonna tell my momma!" In today's world she would have told her mom and the dad would have sued the city.

On a serious note. It pisses me off when a pet is left in a hot car. It infurates me that someone would do that to a child.
