When I first introduce my guitar students to improvising (using a blues scale), if they try to play too fast (most do) I offer the analogy: "What do you do when you've got someone talking your ear off and not making much of a change in pace or tone?" They almost universally answer: "Quit paying attention." So then, if notes are words, you've got to keep the attention of your listener and not let what you're playing turn into just noise. That then brings up the entire topic of dynamics, phrasing, tone, etc. Originally Posted by willy4pres

I don't think anyone is saying fast is best, but it's always wild to see someone play that fast. I'm impressed at how fast he is, but that doesn't mean I can listen to him for more than a minute. It becomes nothing but noise at that point. Originally Posted by Berseker

well the important difference is:
- playing fast
vs.
- having the skills to do so
the super cool thing about dudes like this is that having this sort of skill they really can play anything they want ... from the slowest to the fastest.
i just think its cool that he can do this, amazing even. not musical at all but he needs now to concentrate on rhythm playing and develop a style.
the funny thing about getting this sort of skill is that once you can do it, you tend to do it. looking at vai, his playing has grown on me only in the sense you can see that he can play rhythm and melody and all that ... but his music still sucks because he can't stop him self from playing fast.
