Can Someone Explain An Ipod To Me?
I realize I'm hopelessly behind the times, but with all this talk about eliminating CDs I figured I might as well get with the program?
Where does one get the tunes from?
Can one transfer tunes from existing CDs to an Ipod?
Can one listen to it without headphones (ie with a walkman one couldn't)
Approxiamtely, how much does it cost? How much do tunes cost?
What do I look for in a good Ipod?
Am I blocking out all other noises with an Ipod (ie will I get run over while crossing the street?)
On the outset these things seem like a nuisance to me, but if it's going to become the only way to hear music I guess I must capitulate. I realize these questions are naive, and I apologize, but it is getting nearer to the time in which I must know the technology.
Any help would be appreciated.
Sincere thanks.

I don't think answering your questions will help you. Go to the Apple Store and try one. http://www.apple.com/retail/biltmore/map/ That'll provide all of the answers.

Download and install itunes to your computer. It's free. http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Then you can browse the itunes store. Songs are 99 cents. You can listen to a sample of every song. You can buy them and download them to your computer. You can burn them to CD or you can buy an ipod and put them on your ipod from your computer.

Many thanks to MikeL and Plexi. MikeL, thanks for looking up the Phoenix store.
Is Apple the only one that makes the Ipod?

Thanks STC. Is an Ipod exclusively for outside, or should I say, personal listening? Like a Walkman is/was? Or can you put it on in a room and listen to it, for example like a stereo or a radio? I told you I was very dumb about this. Sorry!

I finally crossed over to the ipod side about 6 months ago. I have my entire CD collection in my itunes account (never downloaded any) and I've got a lot of it on my ipodfrom there.
I swear, I only put a cd in if it's new and I'm putting it into my library. I still buy cd's, the old man in me prefers to have something concrete, but I have been thoroughly converted in my listening habits.
It's all pretty user friendly too. I am a luddite and I've managed so I think that anyone can.

I'm just not sure I understand the concept of buying compressed files.
I do have a little mp3 player I use for working out....and the mp3's I've ripped sound OK...a little thin on the top and bottom, but good enough for working out.....
But to purchase music that isn't the full wav file seems a bit strange....isn't Apple doing something about that?Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett
