What do you guys think of this band Ra?

So I was listening to the Octane channel on Sirius and they were playing some songs by the band Ra. I was like, "Well these guys aren't too bad, maybe I'll check them out, I never buy anything new anymore anyway." So bored as I was, I went to Best Buy, I had a $50 gift certificate from the holidays I still haven't used, so I saw their album "Duality" for $10 so I got it.

I don't know I kinda liked it, thought it was pretty good as far as that nu-metal shit goes. Kind of had some interesting stuff and sequencing on it, so it wasn't that predictable. And I guess the lead singer is into the whole Egyptian Ra deal so it had some of that influence on it.

I didn't realize the bass player of Trixter is in this band...LOL. And the singer is the brother of that actress Rachel Ticotin. There's gotta be a 15-year age difference there...weird.

Anyway, anyone hear their other studio album? Any good?

Yeah that's on the album I bought, it's not bad. I mean it's a nu-metal version of the song, so it's obviously nothing like the Police version. The guy does have a good voice though.

    And it shouldn't be.

Not a Limp Bizkit(sp) fan, but really dug their version of Faith.

Wasn't it the Diamond One himself that said "you should only cover a song if you can do it different or do it better?"

    Anything on youtube?

Judging only from the three "my space" tunes, they seem to have the same vibe as Linkin Park, the sweet benign verses crashing into aggressive beats and harmonies. The vocalist has a good voice but I think Chester Bennington performs better. Vocally, the harmonies reminded me alot of the type used by Queensryche. The Police cover sounded like a note-for-note reworking of the tune, but I never liked that song. Nothing made me want to run out and buy the album.

Their first cd was even better than Duality. The song "Do you call my name" is one of my favorites of the last 10 years! Awesome!

I met the singer a few years ago before he got signed... the band's been through a few lineup changes, and if memory serves, he's the only original member left, but has always been the creative force...

Sahaj is originally from Queens, NY and I originally caught his band by accident opening at Mulcahy's on Long Island for none other than Kip Winger's solo acoustic tour! They were hanging by the bar after their set watching Kip sing and take requests, so we got to chat a bit. I had a strong feeling that he had the goods to get signed, just by comparing to a lot of other unsigned bands I had seen at the time. They started as a NYC area band and later relocated to the New England and got radio play there, and I believe have now relocated to the midwest.

There's also a live record out with one new studio track tacked on; I believe a new studio album is in the works.

LOVE this group and accidentally ran into them on their myspace sight several months ago. I actually love their cover of "Every Little Thing" and if I remember correctly, they've been around for several years. "Do You Call My Name" is definitely my favorite song of their's that I've heard. I've had a hard time finding their stuff in stores, though.

Yeah I found their album at Best Buy, they had the other two there as well. But I had heard "Fallen Angels" and "Tell Me" on the radio, so I bought that "Duality" album.

Not sure why they haven't quite hit it big, they sound as good to me as other comparable stuff.

I've been surprised, too, but I know that their major label dropped them after Duality, and the live record is now out on an indie label, although I believe distributed by a major. I think they had some moderate local success in the New England area with the first record, but they just didn't take off nationally.

You're right, they sound just as good as anybody else from that genre, but timing and marketing hasn't been in their favor as far as I can tell, at least as far as that big breakthrough success.

I'd love to see Ed & co. take these guys out on a tour!

Funny how some bands make it, and some just don't. Just not sure why these guys haven't hit. Maybe it's the lineup changes that someone mentioned.
