Did anyone happen to see.....
I know no one likes American Idol here...but just happened to be watching it with the woman last night...and on comes this kid who can't sing ...doing "You really got me" and guess who they had as a special guest playing the guitar.....Joe Perry. Perry also appeared later in the show ....
Just had to wonder ....does anyone think they offered this to EVH? If they did I'm sure he would have turned it down....but I wonder if the offer was possibly made...if it wasnt I think its an insult . No one made this song more recognizable than Van Halen....And no one would have played it better...
Perry did an adequate job....he did as much as he could with the skills that he has...But I couldnt help thinking EVH would have made this so much more spectacular.
Any thoughts from anyone else???keVH

My thought is that this was part of a package deal offered to Aerosmith...Perry plays at this season's finale and then Aerosmith (Steve and Joe) will be "mentors" for one show next season on an "Aerosmith" night. Similar to Bon Jovi night this year where contestants will sing all Aerosmith tunes. While this may sound a bit out there, think of all the Aero power ballads that they could sing (i.e. don't expect anyone to be belting out Combination).
So IMO no, they didn't offer to EVH and it was an Aero deal all along.
(and yes, I admit I watch the show every season )

I was thinking the same thing. Ed would have kicked butt. However because Sanjya sucked so bad I was glad Ed was not there.
Perry did a good job. Whether you like him or not, he has his shit together and is always professional. I felt sorry for him, he would have done a better job singing than Sanjya.Better use it up before it gets old!

You make it sound like Joe Perry's a hack..
Good question though. Who knows what conversations take place on these things. I certainly didn't expect to see Perry OR Green Day.
The tribute to Sgt Pepper was kind of cool. I'd rather hear that than the crappy songs that are written for the finale.
Not that I really cared about who won, but it irked me that the TIVO cut off before the end of the show (exactly two hours), so the announcement was not recorded. A bit annoying...Don't drink the Jim Jones punch. They're called theToxic Twins for a reason...

You have to give Aerosmith a lot of credit for the business thinking -- they are usually not out of the consciousness of music fans for very long. Steven Tyler singing "Amazing Grace" on a Christian network (which is surreal in and of itself); Perry on AI; Perry tends to show up on VH1 "looking back" type of shows; etc.
In stark contrast, I give you Van Halen -- EVH shows up for adult oriented film premieres, NAMM conventions and golf tournaments. AVH has not been seen outside the house since he smacked the last cymbal crash on the '04 tour. MA and SH are out and about, as well as DLR, but nailing down their "membership credentials" is like nailing Jell-O (R) to the wall.
Collectively, we (VH fans) must really have some sick devotion to these cats. She's as strong as the mountains, walks tall as a tree.

Sam, Dave,Gary... who cares. its all about what makes you feel good.

Disgraceful!
I didn't see it, but just hearing about it on Stern this morning turned my stomach. The only way I'll forgive Joe Perry for this transgression is if he releases a statement claiming:
- That he's back on booze, smack or both
- That performing with Sangina is an obvious sign that he's hit bottom, and
- That he's going into rehab to get help, because - clearly - if he got on stage with Sangina; he must be completely off the rails!
Not that I wish Joe anything but the best when it comes to his sobriety, but I can't think of any other reason he would do this. Aerosmith certianly doesn't need the money or publicity. It's bad enough that we've had to put up with the shitty power ballads since '87, but this...this is crossing the line....http://www.myspace.com/pennydreadfulnj

Yeah, yet at least the Gong Show had the "Unknown Comic" and that fat guy that used to dance around during the balloon drop.
Not to mention featuring the odd sight of the positively demented Chuck Barris.
However, it truly is odd (and dismaying) that Paula Abdul seems to have taken over the role of the drunken J.P. Morgan."The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."George Bernard Shaw

Must have been an "interesting" interpretation of the classic tune.

Some of you guys are wishing for Eddie to appear on American Idol? Good Lord. This place has hit rock bottom...again. I hope Eddie would have the sense not to be caught dead on that show.

Did Simon evaluate Joe Perry's guitar work? "That solo was udderly ridiculous"
"In fact, you just disgraced Edward Van Halen" ( if that's even possible -read money shots to his own walls) " I felt like I was in a hotel or some cabaret act"
Simon is the shit on that show. At least he thought that fuckin vagina Syngina was horrible and a disgrace to mankind.

Not me - I was just commenting on Aerosmith's propensity to make their existence appear relevant every so often, as opposed to . . .
VH could certainly tap these or other outlets. I have little doubt that Leno, Letterman, Conan or Kimmel would welcome them with open arms if they decided to start marketing for a tour and / or a record. VH (however "it" is defined anymore) just doesn't seem to give a rip about that aspect of the industry anymore - or even putting out new music. She's as strong as the mountains, walks tall as a tree.
